Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a vocational rehabilitation counselor in Virginia?
Virginia requires vocational rehabilitation counselors working in licensed settings to hold or pursue licensure through the Virginia Board of Counseling, which issues the Licensed Professional Counselor credential. You will need a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling or a related counseling field, supervised clinical hours, and passage of the National Counselor Examination or a board-approved equivalent. Many Virginia employers also expect or require the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor credential from the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification alongside state licensure.
Which companies hire vocational rehabilitation counselors in Virginia?
Virginia vocational rehabilitation counselor roles are posted by Bon Secours, VHC Health, and University of Virginia and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Virginia's mix of state rehabilitation agencies, large integrated health systems, and federally funded disability services contractors creates a broad and stable employer base for this profession.
Which Virginia cities have the most vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs?
Arlington, Charlottesville, and Salem have the most vocational rehabilitation counselor openings in Virginia. Richmond's concentration of state government offices and nonprofit disability services organizations drives the bulk of postings, while Northern Virginia benefits from proximity to federal contractors and large health systems, and Virginia Beach reflects demand from military-connected rehabilitation programs and regional hospital networks.
Are there remote vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they are limited. Much of vocational rehabilitation counseling involves in-person assessments, job site visits, and face-to-face client sessions, which restricts full remote work. About 0% of vocational rehabilitation counselor openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and the roles most likely to offer remote flexibility are those focused on telephonic case management, benefits counseling, or administrative coordination rather than direct field-based services.
How can I get hired as a vocational rehabilitation counselor in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services, which regularly hires counselor trainees and rehabilitation technicians who work under supervision while completing licensure requirements. Adjacent roles such as benefits specialist, employment specialist, or case manager at disability-serving nonprofits across Richmond and Northern Virginia frequently serve as stepping stones. Completing a supervised internship through an accredited Virginia counseling program and pursuing the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor credential, even as a candidate, strengthens applications considerably for new graduates.
Where can I find and apply to vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your background and preferences, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
