Senior Level Project Controls Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a senior level project controls engineer job?
Employers at this level look for candidates who have owned the full controls lifecycle on large capital projects, not just supported it. Demonstrate hands-on experience with earned value management, integrated master schedules, and cost variance analysis. The clearest edge comes from showing you have led a controls team or mentored junior engineers, and that your work directly influenced project decisions at the executive or owner level.
Which companies hire senior level project controls engineers?
Companies hiring senior level project controls engineers right now include Granite Construction, Fluor, and Cushman & Wakefield, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Hiring at this level tends to concentrate among large engineering and construction firms, major energy and infrastructure owners, and the program management consultancies that serve them.
Are there remote senior level project controls engineer jobs?
Yes, though fully remote positions are less common at this level than hybrid arrangements tied to a project site or regional office. About 29% of senior level project controls engineer openings are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with the balance requiring on-site presence on active construction or capital programs where real-time schedule and cost oversight is essential.
What makes a project controls engineer role senior level?
Senior level roles are defined by ownership and scope rather than task execution. A senior project controls engineer sets the controls framework for a project, leads variance analysis and recovery planning, and presents cost and schedule status directly to project directors or clients. They are also expected to mentor mid-level and junior staff, establish reporting standards, and integrate controls across multiple project workstreams simultaneously.
Which industries hire the most senior level project controls engineers?
Senior level project controls engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Technology & Software, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. These sectors drive demand because they execute large, multi-year capital programs where rigorous cost and schedule control directly protects project viability and investor returns.
