Brown and Caldwell's San Francisco CA office is currently looking for a Supervising Engineer with 10+ years of wastewater/water design and construction expertise to join our growing team! The primary role is a senior member of our engineering services during construction (ESDC) field team. Responsibilities will include leading and coordinating ESDC for major elements of the biosolids treatment upgrades, commissioning and start-up at a wastewater treatment facility in San Francisco (~$2B construction value). Candidate will work closely with the field engineering team, design team including subconsultants, other key technical experts and leaders around the company, the Owner, and contractor. This is a full time position and the role requires being onsite in San Francisco at least three days a week. The position may include work in other Bay Area locations.
Responsibilities
- Manage all engineering aspects of complex construction projects and ensure successful on time completion
- Oversee and make recommendations on selection of materials for construction projects, considering quality, sustainability, and cost.
- Review vendor designs and details and offer knowledgeable feedback and modification suggestions.
- Coordinate construction sequencing and logistics, ensuring smooth operations.
- Contribute to design-build coordination and design optimization.
- Apply value engineering principles to deliver cost-effective solutions.
- Perform startup and commissioning duties to ensure operational effectiveness of the completed projects.
- Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.
Preferred Requirements
- Provide on-site engineering services during construction leadership for major portions of the biosolids treatment facility involving civil, structural, electrical, process mechanical, building mechanical, instrumentation and control, and other disciplines. The project includes sludge pumping, thickening, pre-dewatering, thermal hydrolysis pretreatment, sludge cooling, anaerobic digestion, final dewatering, cake storage and loadout, recycled water treatment, odor control, steam generation and associated utility and auxiliary systems.
- Coordinate with engineering design discipline leads and technical reviewers to respond to requests for information (RFIs)
- Work collaboratively with Owner’s team, construction manager, and contractor to resolve technical issues during construction
- Become familiar with the project plans and specifications for technical and contractual requirements
- Review technical submittals and designers review comments for conformance with contract requirements
- Assistance with start-up and commissioning operations
- Review change order merit with respect to design requirements
Mentorship
- May provide mentorship, guidance, support, and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills and grow within their roles.
Skills and Competencies
- Highly proficient in the key aspects of construction, including materials selection, vendor design review, construction sequencing, and logistics coordination.
- Proficiency in design optimization and value engineering.
- Adept at managing projects independently and unsupervised.
- Strong knowledge of project management techniques
- Ability to keep abreast of industry trends and practices to make recommendations
Experience
- Typically requires minimum of 10 years of construction engineering, project management or related experience related field or equivalent experience is required.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in the wastewater/water treatment engineering and construction
- 10 years’ design and construction related experience on various water and wastewater projects.
- Familiarity with process mechanical upgrades to wastewater facilities
- Prior experience in the construction of water and wastewater treatment plants, pumping plants, water and wastewater treatment plants, or other facility improvement type projects.
- Familiarity in working within operational water and wastewater treatment facilities.
- Familiarity with the start-up, testing, and commissioning of rehabilitated or new plant facility projects.
- Familiarity with local design and construction standards, regulations, and specifications.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Ability to complete and maintain company required health and safety training and abide by company’s and client’s health and safety standards prior to going out in the field.
- Valid California driver’s license and good driving record.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in construction engineering or related field is required.
Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.
Location C: $140,000 - $191,000
