Project Management Consultant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project management consultant in California?
The most direct path is earning a bachelor's degree in business, engineering, or a related field and obtaining the Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute, which California employers treat as the de facto standard for consulting roles. California has no state-issued license for project management consultants specifically, but candidates targeting construction-adjacent roles benefit from familiarity with California's contractor licensing framework overseen by the Contractors State License Board.
How much do project management consultants make in California?
Project management consultants in California earn a median of about $120,910 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $69,180 for the lowest 10% to over $188,560 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project management consultants in California?
Employers hiring project management consultants in California right now include Alvarez & Marsal, BKF Engineers, and Kennedy/Jenks Consultants, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of defense contractors, large health systems, and enterprise technology firms means hiring tends to be consistent across the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and San Diego year-round.
Which California cities have the most project management consultant jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego have the most project management consultant openings in California. The Bay Area leads because of its density of enterprise technology companies and management consulting offices, while Los Angeles is driven by entertainment, aerospace, and healthcare system projects, and San Diego is anchored by defense contractors and biotech firms that run large, multi-year program offices.
Are there remote project management consultant jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 36% of project management consultant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work centers on coordination, documentation, and stakeholder communication rather than physical presence. The phases most likely to be fully remote are planning, reporting, and vendor management, while go-live support and on-site audits typically require in-person attendance.
How can I get hired as a project management consultant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a project coordinator or PMO analyst role, which large California employers like Kaiser Permanente, Northrop Grumman, and Deloitte use as a structured feeder into consulting tracks. Earning a CAPM certification from the Project Management Institute signals readiness before the PMP is within reach. Entry candidates can also move laterally from business analyst, operations analyst, or program support roles, all of which are common in California's technology and healthcare sectors and build the core competencies consulting hiring managers expect.
Where can I find and apply to project management consultant jobs in California?
You can find and apply to project management consultant jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your background and target location, and apply directly to the ones that match.
