How do you become a project management coordinator in California?
Most California employers require a bachelor's degree in business administration, construction management, engineering, or a related field. California does not issue a state license for project management coordinators, but earning the CAPM credential through PMI is a recognized entry-level qualification that strengthens applications significantly. Many candidates start in administrative or operations support roles within California's large tech, healthcare, or construction sectors and move into coordinator positions from there.
How much do project management coordinators make in California?
Project management coordinators in California earn a median of about $120,910 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $69,180 for the lowest 10% to over $188,560 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project management coordinators in California?
Employers hiring project management coordinators in California right now include University of California - San Francisco, California State University, and HDR, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of Fortune 500 technology companies, major health systems, and large defense contractors creates consistent demand for coordinators across industries throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most project management coordinator jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego have the most project management coordinator openings in California. Los Angeles drives volume through its entertainment, construction, and healthcare sectors, while San Francisco and San Jose reflect the Bay Area's density of technology companies and product-driven organizations that rely heavily on project coordination roles.
Are there remote project management coordinator jobs in California?
Yes, and they're fairly common since project management coordination is largely desk-based work involving scheduling, documentation, and stakeholder communication. About 20% of project management coordinator openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with the fully remote share concentrated in technology, software, and consulting firms rather than construction or healthcare roles that require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a project management coordinator in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to project coordinator or project administrator roles at California's large health systems, construction firms, or tech companies, which regularly hire candidates with no direct project management experience. Employers like Kaiser Permanente and large general contractors in Los Angeles and San Diego run structured onboarding for associate-level coordinators. Earning a CAPM certification before applying, or transitioning from an administrative coordinator or operations assistant role, are the most effective moves for building a competitive application without prior project management titles.
