Project Manager Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project manager in South Dakota?
South Dakota does not require a state-issued license to work as a project manager, so most employers hire based on education and professional certification. A bachelor's degree in business, engineering, or a related field is the standard entry point. Earning a PMP through the Project Management Institute strengthens your candidacy significantly with employers like Sanford Health and state agency contractors. Construction-focused roles may also value a South Dakota contractor registration or experience with public project bidding.
How much do project managers make in South Dakota?
Project managers in South Dakota earn a median of about $164,330 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $116,320 for the lowest 10% to over $209,210 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project managers in South Dakota?
Employers hiring project managers in South Dakota right now include Interstates Companies, HDR, and Border States Paving, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Dakota's mix of large healthcare systems, financial services operations, and state infrastructure projects keeps project management hiring active across multiple industries year-round.
Which South Dakota cities have the most project manager jobs?
Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and Brookings have the most project manager openings in South Dakota. Sioux Falls drives the bulk of demand as the state's largest city and economic center, home to major healthcare systems and financial employers, while Rapid City supports construction and government project work tied to western South Dakota's infrastructure, and Pierre generates openings through state agency contracts and public works programs.
Are there remote project manager jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, and more than most fields, because project management is largely a coordination and documentation role that translates well to remote work. About 17% of project manager openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how broadly companies have accepted distributed teams for this function. IT and software project management roles tend to be the most remote-friendly, while construction and facilities project management typically require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a project manager in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a project coordinator, administrative specialist, or operations analyst with a South Dakota employer and moving into project management from within. Sanford Health and large construction firms operating in the Sioux Falls and Rapid City markets sometimes hire associate project managers or project support staff for people building their credentials. Earning a CAPM certification from the Project Management Institute signals seriousness to hiring managers when your experience is limited, and volunteer project leadership with South Dakota nonprofits or local government initiatives can help fill a thin resume.
Where can I find and apply to project manager jobs in South Dakota?
You can find and apply to project manager jobs in South Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
