Public Relations Intern Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a public relations intern in California?
Public relations internships in California require no state license or certification, so the path runs through education and portfolio building. Most California employers expect candidates to be enrolled in or to have completed a bachelor's program in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field. Building a portfolio of writing samples, volunteering with campus PR organizations, and pursuing student chapters of the Public Relations Society of America are the most direct ways to become competitive for California roles.
How much do public relations interns make in California?
Public relations interns in California earn a median of about $85,030 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $49,550 for the lowest 10% to over $160,520 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire public relations interns in California?
Employers hiring public relations interns in California right now include Amazon, BioMarin Pharmaceutical, and Databricks, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of entertainment studios, major tech firms, and consumer brand headquarters means the intern market here is broader and more varied than in most other states.
Which California cities have the most public relations intern jobs?
San Francisco, Culver City, and Los Angeles have the most public relations intern openings in California. Los Angeles dominates because of its entertainment, media, and consumer brand industries, while San Francisco draws hiring from major technology companies and venture-backed startups, and San Diego contributes openings through its biotech sector and defense-adjacent communications needs.
Are there remote public relations intern jobs in California?
Yes, and more than many entry-level fields, since a meaningful share of PR work involves writing, media outreach, and digital content that can be done off-site. About 15% of public relations intern openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the desk-based nature of much of the work. Media monitoring, social media management, and press release drafting are the tasks most commonly performed remotely.
How can I get hired as a public relations intern in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to structured internship programs at California's large entertainment studios, tech companies, or public relations agencies, which regularly recruit candidates with minimal professional experience. Working with a student chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, contributing to a campus newspaper or communications office, or volunteering for a nonprofit's social media builds a usable portfolio. Adjacent roles like marketing coordinator assistant or communications assistant at California universities and nonprofits also open the door.
Where can I find and apply to public relations intern jobs in California?
