Summer Associate Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a summer associate in California?
Most summer associate positions in California require current enrollment in a JD or MBA program at an accredited institution, with applications submitted through on-campus recruiting or directly to the firm. Law-track candidates typically target roles after their first or second year and must eventually pass the California Bar Exam administered by the State Bar of California before practicing. Business and consulting tracks look for candidates from programs at schools like UCLA, USC, or UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business.
Which companies hire summer associates in California?
Employers hiring summer associates in California right now include Rubrik, Indacochea Sheep Ranch, and Ansolabehere Sheep, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of major law firms, global consulting offices, and technology company headquarters makes it one of the deepest markets in the country for structured summer associate programs.
Which California cities have the most summer associate jobs?
Palo Alto, Lakeview, and Bakersfield have the most summer associate openings in California. San Francisco dominates due to its density of law firm offices, venture capital firms, and financial institutions, while Los Angeles draws heavily from entertainment, media, and corporate law, and San Diego's biotech and defense sectors support a steady pipeline of consulting and legal associate roles.
Are there remote summer associate jobs in California?
Yes, but they're less common than in fully desk-based fields, since most summer associate programs are designed around in-office mentorship, client exposure, and team integration. About 0% of summer associate openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with the remote share concentrated in technology consulting and certain research-focused roles rather than traditional law or investment banking tracks.
How can I get hired as a summer associate in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying through your law or business school's on-campus recruiting program, which large California firms specifically use to hire students without prior associate experience. Firms like Latham and Watkins, Munger Tolles, and major consulting offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco run structured first-year and diversity fellowship programs designed for candidates early in their programs. Building a strong academic record, completing relevant clinic or project work, and obtaining a State Bar of California student certification where applicable all strengthen a first-application candidacy.
Where can I find and apply to summer associate jobs in California?
You can find and apply to summer associate jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles by location or practice area, find the ones that fit your background and program year, and apply directly to each listing.
