Public Relations Representative Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a public relations representative in Illinois?
Public relations representatives in Illinois do not require a state-issued license to practice. The standard path begins with a bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, or journalism, followed by internship experience at an Illinois agency, corporate communications department, or nonprofit. Accreditation through the Public Relations Society of America, specifically the Accredited in Public Relations credential, is recognized by Illinois employers as a mark of professional credibility and can strengthen a candidate's position considerably.
Which companies hire public relations representatives in Illinois?
Employers hiring public relations representatives in Illinois right now include Ecm Enterprises, Highwire, and BairesDev, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Illinois's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, major healthcare networks, and global PR agencies in Chicago makes it one of the deepest hiring markets for communications professionals in the country.
Which Illinois cities have the most public relations representative jobs?
Chicago, Champaign, and Urbana have the most public relations representative openings in Illinois. Chicago drives the overwhelming majority of listings because of its density of corporate headquarters, advertising and PR agencies, large hospital systems, and government bodies, while Naperville and Springfield generate openings through suburban corporate campuses and state government communications offices respectively.
Are there remote public relations representative jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than many fields, since much of the work involves writing, media outreach, and digital communications that translate well to remote settings. About 40% of public relations representative openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting broad adoption of flexible arrangements across agencies and corporate teams. Media relations and content development roles tend to be the most remote-friendly, while crisis communications and government affairs roles typically require an in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a public relations representative in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or coordinator role at a Chicago-area agency or a corporate communications department, where many large Illinois employers run structured programs for new graduates. Edelman, Weber Shandwick, and major hospital systems like Northwestern Medicine offer rotational or entry-level communications positions that require a degree but not prior professional experience. A portfolio of writing samples, a student-run PR campaign, or PRSSA chapter involvement at an Illinois university signals readiness to Illinois hiring managers ahead of formal credentials.
Where can I find and apply to public relations representative jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to public relations representative jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to Illinois employers. Search the listings, identify roles that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit your background.
