Regional Planner Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a regional planner in Iowa?
Most regional planner positions in Iowa require at least a bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, geography, or a closely related field, with a master's degree preferred for senior roles. Iowa does not issue a state-specific planner license, but the national AICP certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners is the recognized professional credential Iowa employers look for. Candidates sit for the AICP exam after meeting experience and education requirements set by the institute.
Which companies hire regional planners in Iowa?
Companies currently hiring regional planners in Iowa include State of Iowa, Booz Allen Hamilton, and SSAB, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Beyond private consulting firms, county and city planning departments across Iowa represent a significant share of ongoing openings, particularly within metropolitan planning organizations tied to larger urban areas.
Which Iowa cities have the most regional planner jobs?
Johnston, Des Moines, and Cedar Rapids lead Iowa in regional planner openings. Des Moines dominates as the state capital and home to its largest metropolitan planning organization, while Cedar Rapids anchors Linn County's active land use and transportation planning programs, and Iowa City's concentration of university-linked and county government institutions sustains consistent demand.
Are there remote regional planner jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're limited. Regional planning work involves site visits, public meetings, and coordination with local governments that typically require in-person presence. About 0% of regional planner openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those arrangements tend to apply most to research-heavy or data analysis tasks rather than community engagement or project management roles.
How can I get hired as a regional planner in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for planning technician or planning assistant roles with Iowa city and county planning departments, which regularly hire candidates with a bachelor's degree and no professional experience. The Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and larger counties like Polk and Linn occasionally offer internship-to-hire pathways. Completing your AICP Candidate status and building a GIS portfolio strengthens applications considerably, as does lateral experience in public administration, transportation, or environmental review.
Where can I find and apply to regional planner jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to regional planner jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current Iowa openings. Search the roles available, identify the ones that fit your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that match.
