Assistant Project Manager Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a assistant project manager in Iowa?
Most assistant project manager roles in Iowa require a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, business, or a related field. Iowa does not issue a state license specifically for this title, but many employers expect candidates to be working toward a Project Management Institute credential such as the CAPM or PMP. Graduates of Iowa State University's construction engineering program and the University of Iowa's business programs are common entry points into Iowa firms.
Which companies hire assistant project managers in Iowa?

Iowa's construction and infrastructure sectors drive consistent demand, with large general contractors and state agency project offices among the most active.
Which Iowa cities have the most assistant project manager jobs?
Cedar Rapids, Ankeny, and Des Moines account for the most assistant project manager openings in Iowa. Des Moines leads because of its concentration of commercial development, state government infrastructure projects, and regional headquarters for construction and engineering firms, while Cedar Rapids and Davenport draw activity from manufacturing expansion, river corridor infrastructure, and industrial facility projects.
Are there remote assistant project manager jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of assistant project manager openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting that most of the role involves site visits, contractor coordination, and in-person meetings. The parts of the work most suited to remote arrangements are schedule tracking, documentation, and submittal review.
How can I get hired as a assistant project manager in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a project coordinator or field engineer role at a mid-size Iowa general contractor or civil construction firm, then moving into assistant project manager responsibilities within one to two years. Firms like Kiewit and Shive-Hattery run structured internship and new-graduate programs in Iowa.
