Research Engineer Jobs in Florida: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research engineer in Florida?
Most research engineer roles in Florida require at minimum a Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline, though many positions, especially in defense, biomedical devices, and university research, prefer a Master's or doctorate. Florida does not require a state license specifically for the research engineer title, but engineers who sign off on public-facing designs may need a Professional Engineer license through the Florida Board of Professional Engineers. Building relevant lab or project experience through Florida's university research programs or co-op placements strengthens candidacy considerably.
Which companies hire research engineers in Florida?
Employers hiring research engineers in Florida right now include University of North Florida, CVS Health, and Air Force Test Center, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Florida's concentration of aerospace primes, defense contractors, and medical device manufacturers means research engineering demand is distributed across both large institutions and specialized engineering firms throughout the state.
Which Florida cities have the most research engineer jobs?
Gainesville, Orlando, and Eglin AFB have the highest concentration of research engineer openings in Florida. Orlando anchors much of the aerospace simulation and defense technology hiring, the Space Coast cities benefit from NASA and defense contractor activity, and Tampa draws openings tied to defense systems, medical research, and university-affiliated labs at institutions like the University of South Florida.
How can I get hired as a research engineer in Florida with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a research assistant or junior engineer role within a Florida university research center or a defense contractor's early-career program. Employers like Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, and Northrop Grumman run structured associate engineer and new-graduate programs at their Florida facilities. Adjacent roles such as test engineer, laboratory technician, or quality assurance engineer are common lateral starting points. A strong thesis project, published research, or a relevant certification in systems engineering or data analysis gives candidates a meaningful edge in a competitive applicant pool.
Where can I find and apply to research engineer jobs in Florida?
You can find and apply to research engineer jobs in Florida on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to Florida employers and research institutions. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly to each one.
