Research Fellow Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research fellow in California?
Becoming a research fellow in California typically requires completing a doctoral or professional degree and then securing a fellowship appointment through a university, hospital system, or research institute. Most positions require prior research output such as publications or a completed dissertation. For fellows working in clinical research, compliance with California Department of Public Health regulations and institutional IRB approval processes is standard. Postdoctoral programs at UC campuses and Stanford are common entry points.
How much do research fellows make in California?
Research fellows in California earn a median of about $83,520 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $52,110 for the lowest 10% to over $171,640 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire research fellows in California?
Employers hiring research fellows in California right now include City of Hope, Calico Life Sciences, and Genentech, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of academic medical centers, biotechnology firms, and federally funded research institutions means hiring activity is spread across both the public and private sectors statewide.
Which California cities have the most research fellow jobs?
San Francisco, South San Francisco, and Duarte have the most research fellow openings in California. San Francisco and the broader Bay Area lead because of the density of UC campuses, biotech headquarters, and health systems, while San Diego's concentration of genomics and pharmaceutical research institutes drives strong demand there, and Los Angeles benefits from major academic medical centers and public health research programs at UCLA and USC.
Are there remote research fellow jobs in California?
Yes, but they are limited. Research fellow roles are largely hands-on positions tied to laboratories, clinical sites, and academic institutions, making fully remote work uncommon. About 10% of research fellow openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those that are tend to involve computational research, data analysis, or health policy work rather than bench science.
How can I get hired as a research fellow in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to a postdoctoral associate or junior research associate position, which large California institutions such as UC San Diego, UCSF, and Kaiser Permanente's research division offer specifically for candidates finishing their doctoral programs. Research coordinator and clinical research associate roles are strong lateral entry points that build the credentials needed for a fellowship appointment. A completed dissertation, published abstracts, or a strong laboratory portfolio gives candidates a measurable edge in competitive applicant pools.
Where can I find and apply to research fellow jobs in California?
You can find and apply to research fellow jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across biomedical, clinical, and policy research disciplines. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your background and research focus, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
