Resident Engineer Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a resident engineer in New Jersey?
Becoming a resident engineer in New Jersey typically requires a bachelor's degree in civil or a related engineering discipline, followed by licensure as a Professional Engineer through the New Jersey State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Candidates must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, accumulate qualifying experience under a licensed PE, and then pass the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam. Many resident engineer roles with state agencies or municipalities require active New Jersey PE licensure from the start.
Which companies hire resident engineers in New Jersey?
Employers hiring resident engineers in New Jersey right now include Techno Consult, GFT, and Arcadis, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New Jersey's active transportation and infrastructure programs, particularly those managed through the New Jersey Department of Transportation and NJ Transit, drive consistent demand from both public agencies and private engineering consultants operating across the state.
Which New Jersey cities have the most resident engineer jobs?
Newark, East Brunswick, and Bridgewater have the most resident engineer openings in New Jersey. Newark and Jersey City draw the highest volume due to their concentration of major transit, port, and urban infrastructure projects, while Trenton sees steady demand tied to state agency contracts and NJDOT headquarters operations that route construction oversight work through the capital region.
Are there remote resident engineer jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, but they're rare. About 14% of resident engineer openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the field's fundamentally on-site nature. Resident engineers are typically stationed at active construction or inspection sites, though project closeout, documentation review, and administrative coordination tasks are the portions most likely to be performed off-site.
How can I get hired as a resident engineer in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an entry-level field inspector or construction inspector role with a New Jersey public agency or large engineering consultant. NJDOT and county engineering departments regularly hire junior inspectors and assistant resident engineers for entry-level positions, and firms such as AECOM and WSP run new-graduate programs in New Jersey. Candidates transitioning from adjacent roles like project engineer, design engineer, or quality control technician are competitive, especially if they are actively pursuing their Engineer-in-Training certification.
Where can I find and apply to resident engineer jobs in New Jersey?
