Company Description
The Train Control Upgrade Project (TCUP) is an SFMTA capital project which invests in the Muni Metro rail system by replacing the nearly 30-year-old Automatic Train Control System (ATCS) in the subway with a new Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system. The project also expands CBTC managed territory outside of the subways to the surface portions of Muni Metro, where signals and switches are currently independently operated in a first-come, first-serve configuration. Under CBTC, Muni’s entire rail network can be managed centrally with a single, modernized system. Replacing the ATCS with a state-of-the-art CBTC system will maintain the excellent safety record of the current system, while also increasing the subway’s efficiency and reliability. With a $700 million capital budget, the Train Control Upgrade Project represents a bold step forward for SFMTA and the Muni Metro system. Through a 7-phase implementation plan, an integrated team approach, and flexible contract structures, TCUP is designed to overcome challenges and set a new standard for urban transit infrastructure projects. With a targeted completion date of 2032, the project promises lasting benefits for San Francisco’s public transit system and its riders. Join this exciting team at the cutting edge of urban rail technology!

Tips for Your Resident Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to project phases
Resident engineers are hired to own specific project phases, so structure your resume around phases you've led, not just titles you've held. Call out submittals, RFIs, and daily inspection reports by project type to match what hiring teams scan for.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists resident engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by project delivery method
Construction management and design-build firms hire resident engineers differently than public agencies do. When searching, identify the delivery method in each posting so your application language mirrors how that employer runs field oversight and contractor coordination.
Document your inspection certifications upfront
ACI, NICET, and state-specific inspection credentials are often listed as minimum requirements, not preferred qualifications. Put your active certifications in a dedicated section near the top of your resume so they're visible before a recruiter reads your experience.
Prepare for field-scenario interview questions
Interviewers routinely ask how you'd handle a contractor deviating from approved plans or a failing test result mid-pour. Prepare two or three concrete examples from past projects that show how you documented the issue, escalated appropriately, and reached a resolution.
Negotiate scope before you negotiate pay
Before accepting an offer, confirm which projects you'll be assigned to, whether you'll rotate between sites, and who you report to in the field. Resident engineer roles vary sharply in autonomy and scope, and those details shape your day-to-day more than the title does.
Resident Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most resident engineers?
The companies hiring the most resident engineers right now include Goldman Sachs, WSP, and WSP in the U.S., with the largest share of openings in New York, California, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Infrastructure investment and transportation project pipelines are the primary drivers of current demand.
How many resident engineer jobs are remote?
About 19% of resident engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the field-based nature of most positions. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements are telecommunications infrastructure oversight and project controls roles, where document review and reporting can be done off-site.
How do you become a resident engineer?
Start with a bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or a related engineering field. Gain field experience through construction inspection, project engineering, or owner's representative roles. Earn relevant certifications such as ACI or NICET, and build familiarity with contract administration, submittals, and daily reporting. Many resident engineers move up from assistant or field engineer positions on large public infrastructure or transportation projects.
Can you get a resident engineer job with little experience?
Yes, entry-level resident engineer roles exist, particularly on public agency projects and with construction management firms that have structured training programs. Focus on internships or co-op experience that involved field observation, inspection, or contractor coordination. Highlight any coursework in structural analysis, materials testing, or construction methods, and pursue an Engineer-in-Training credential early to strengthen your application.
What does the resident engineer interview process look like?
Most resident engineer interviews include a technical screen focused on your experience with submittals, RFIs, and inspection documentation, followed by a structured behavioral interview covering contractor disputes, safety incidents, and schedule delays. Some employers conduct a site visit or practical exercise to assess how you read drawings or interpret specifications. Public agency interviews often include a scored panel format with predetermined questions.
Where can I find and apply to resident engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to resident engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience, specialization, and preferred location, then apply directly to each one that fits.
