School Bus Driver Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a school bus driver in New York?
You must obtain a New York State school bus driver certificate, which requires holding a CDL Class B or higher with Passenger and School Bus endorsements, passing a physical examination, and completing a New York State-approved pre-service training course. Applications are processed through the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Most school districts and transportation contractors in the state require all of these credentials before a candidate can be scheduled for a route.
Which companies hire school bus drivers in New York?
New York school bus driver roles are posted by First Student, Accucare Nursing, and Greece Central School District and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Large transportation contractors and New York City's Department of Education vendor network account for a significant share of openings, particularly in the five boroughs and on Long Island.
Which New York cities have the most school bus driver jobs?
Brooklyn, Mount Vernon, and Rochester have the most school bus driver openings in New York. New York City dominates because of the sheer size of its public school system and its network of contracted transportation providers, while suburban areas like Long Island and the lower Hudson Valley generate steady demand from large independent school districts and regional contractors serving both public and private schools.
Are there remote school bus driver jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of school bus driver openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, which reflects the hands-on nature of the work. The small share of remote-eligible roles tends to involve dispatch coordination, route planning, or transportation management functions rather than driving.
How can I get hired as a school bus driver in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to one of the large transportation contractors that operate across New York City and Long Island, such as First Student or Reliant Transportation, which regularly hire candidates who hold or are close to earning their CDL and school bus certificate. Many districts and contractors offer paid training programs that cover the New York State pre-service requirement. Coming in as a driver's aide or attendant on a special needs route is a common lateral move that builds experience while you complete credentialing.
Where can I find and apply to school bus driver jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to school bus driver jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state right now. Search the roles available, find the ones that match your credentials and location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
