School Bus Driver Jobs in Ohio: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a school bus driver in Ohio?
To become a school bus driver in Ohio you must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with Passenger and School Bus endorsements, then complete state-required training and pass the Ohio school bus driver certification process administered through the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. Applicants must also clear a background check and a physical examination meeting FMCSA medical standards. A high school diploma or equivalent is the standard education requirement across Ohio districts and contractors.
Which companies hire school bus drivers in Ohio?
Companies currently hiring school bus drivers in Ohio include StoryPoint, Horizon Education Centers, and Childtime Learning Centers, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Ohio's large urban and suburban districts frequently contract with national transportation companies, meaning openings exist across both direct district employment and private contractor roles throughout the state.
Which Ohio cities have the most school bus driver jobs?
Avon, Powell, and New Albany consistently post the most school bus driver openings in Ohio. Columbus and Cleveland lead because of their large urban public school districts and the regional contractor hubs that serve them, while Cincinnati's concentration of private and charter schools alongside the Cincinnati Public Schools district generates steady additional demand.
Are there remote school bus driver jobs in Ohio?
Yes, but they're rare. School bus driving is an inherently on-site role that requires physically operating a vehicle and supervising students on a fixed route. About 0% of school bus driver openings tied to Ohio are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those limited remote postings typically involve dispatch coordination, scheduling, or administrative transportation management rather than active driving duties.
How can I get hired as a school bus driver in Ohio with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is enrolling in a district-sponsored or contractor-sponsored CDL training program, which covers both licensing costs and paid behind-the-wheel hours. First Student and other large Ohio contractors regularly hire candidates without driving experience and provide on-the-job training from day one. Applicants who have worked as school paraprofessionals, childcare aides, or activity van drivers have a measurable advantage and frequently move laterally into bus driver roles at Ohio district offices or transportation departments.
Where can I find and apply to school bus driver jobs in Ohio?
You can find and apply to school bus driver jobs in Ohio on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from districts and transportation contractors across the state. Search the listings, identify the roles that match your CDL class and availability, and apply directly to each one through the posting.
