Security Operations Engineer Jobs in Tennessee: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a security operations engineer in Tennessee?
Most Tennessee employers expect a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, computer science, or information technology combined with industry certifications such as CompTIA Security+, CISSP, or CEH. Tennessee has no state-issued license specific to this role, so credentials and demonstrated hands-on experience carry the most weight. Many candidates build their foundation through university programs at institutions such as Vanderbilt, UTK, or MTSU before moving into junior SOC analyst roles and advancing from there.
How much do security operations engineers make in Tennessee?
Security operations engineers in Tennessee earn a median of about $115,430 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,870 for the lowest 10% to over $250,590 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire security operations engineers in Tennessee?
Employers hiring security operations engineers in Tennessee right now include Allied Universal, Deloitte, and Lipscomb University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Tennessee's mix of large healthcare systems, federal contractors near Oak Ridge, and growing fintech firms in Nashville keeps demand across multiple industries.
Which Tennessee cities have the most security operations engineer jobs?
Nashville, Martin, and Humboldt are the Tennessee cities with the most security operations engineer openings. Nashville's concentration of large healthcare systems, financial services firms, and corporate headquarters drives the bulk of listings, while Knoxville benefits from proximity to Oak Ridge National Laboratory and its network of defense and energy contractors, and Memphis draws demand from logistics giants and regional healthcare networks.
Are there remote security operations engineer jobs in Tennessee?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 0% of security operations engineer openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the desk-based and platform-driven nature of the work. Threat monitoring, SIEM analysis, and cloud security architecture transfer well to remote settings, while roles involving on-site hardware or classified government systems within Tennessee facilities tend to require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a security operations engineer in Tennessee with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior SOC analyst role, which many large Tennessee employers such as HCA Healthcare and defense contractors near Oak Ridge use as a structured on-ramp for candidates without direct engineering experience. Lateral moves from IT helpdesk, network administration, or systems administration are common. Earning CompTIA Security+ before applying gives candidates a measurable edge, and cybersecurity bootcamps offered through Tennessee-based universities can accelerate the transition from adjacent IT roles.
Where can I find and apply to security operations engineer jobs in Tennessee?
You can find and apply to security operations engineer jobs in Tennessee on Migrate Mate, which lists current Tennessee openings across industries and experience levels. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the employers posting them.
