INTRODUCTION
Our thirst for technology is a part of everything we do. The Data Center Engineering team takes the physical design of our data centers into the future. Our lab mirrors a research and development department -- cutting-edge strategies are born, tested and tested again. Along with a team of great minds, you take on complex topics like how we use power or how to run state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly facilities. You're a visionary who optimizes for efficiencies and never stops seeking improvements -- even small changes that can make a huge impact. You generate ideas, communicate recommendations to senior-level executives and drive implementation alongside facilities technicians. With your technical expertise, you ensure compliance with codes and standards, develop infrastructure improvements and serve as an expert in your specialty (e.g., cooling, electrical).
ABOUT THE JOB
As a Data Center Engineer, you will be a technical lead within the Data Center Delivery and Engineering (DCDE) team. In this role, you will serve as a highly motivated Electrical Engineer and Technical Program Manager, leveraging your demonstrated design, construction, equipment operation, and maintenance experience in the area of mission-critical facilities. You will be involved in the development of electrical systems ranging from incoming utility design down to the rack. Your involvement will span the entire project life-cycle, starting at due diligence, progressing through construction and commissioning, and developing into sustaining support for the internal operations team. You will provide technical leadership in a matrix organization, preparing critical documentation such as facility audits, total cost of ownership (TCO) analyses, and concept design reviews to ensure successful product delivery. Behind everything our users see online is the architecture built by the Technical Infrastructure team to keep it running. From developing and maintaining our data centers to building the next generation of Google platforms, we make Google's product portfolio possible. We're proud to be our engineers' engineers and love voiding warranties by taking things apart so we can rebuild them. We keep our networks up and running, ensuring our users have the best and fastest experience possible.

- Ability to demonstrate fluency in design software and analysis of electrical power systems within a matrix organization.
- Ability to travel 30% of the time domestically and internationally.
Responsibilities
- Perform technical evaluations and due diligence of market available multi-tenant facilities (i.e. colocation) for the deployment of Google services and critical infrastructure.
- Manage power system challenges across the project lifecycle, during concept design, detailed design, procurement, bidding, manufacturing, delivery, installation and commissioning on site.
- Identify and resolve issues raised by the cross functional teams and various external stakeholders.
- Understand and evaluate data center designs based on program requirements, level of redundancy, availability aims, risks, and identifying potential single points of failure in the design.
- Interface closely with cross-functional groups, such as the Third-Party Data Center Operations (3PDC-Ops), Energy and Land Strategy (ELS), and Front End Planning (FEP) teams to deliver the electrical solutions to third-party data center projects.

Tips for Your Senior Data Center Engineer Job Search
Quantify infrastructure scale on your resume
Hiring managers want to see the actual size of what you've managed. List rack counts, power capacity in megawatts, and the number of sites or cages you've supported. Generic descriptions of duties won't separate you from other senior candidates.
Highlight certifications for critical facilities
Certifications like BICSI RCDD, Uptime Institute AOS, or a CDCP credential signal that you understand Tier classification, redundancy standards, and uptime requirements. List them prominently because many job descriptions screen for them before a recruiter reads further.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists senior data center engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target openings by deployment type
Hyperscale cloud builds, colocation expansions, and enterprise refresh cycles each require different expertise. Filter your search toward the deployment type that matches your background so your resume reads as an exact fit rather than a generalist application.
Prepare for whiteboard-style design questions
Senior-level interviews often include a scenario where you design a power distribution layout, a cooling topology, or a network cabling plan on the spot. Rehearse narrating your design decisions out loud, including trade-offs between N+1 and 2N redundancy for the role's expected Tier level.
Negotiate on-call scope during the offer stage
Data center roles frequently include 24/7 escalation responsibilities that aren't always spelled out in the job posting. Ask for the on-call rotation structure, expected response times, and whether a standby premium is included before you accept, not after.
Senior Data Center Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most senior data center engineers?
The companies hiring the most senior data center engineers right now include Oracle, NVIDIA, and Amazon, with the largest share of openings in Virginia, Texas, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Hyperscale cloud operators, colocation providers, and large enterprise IT organizations consistently post the highest volume of senior-level openings.
How many senior data center engineer jobs are remote?
About 13% of senior data center engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on physical nature of most data center work. Remote opportunities are most common in roles focused on capacity planning, DCIM platform administration, and vendor management rather than on-floor operations or physical infrastructure builds.
How do you become a senior data center engineer?
Most senior data center engineers start in junior operations or network technician roles and build up through direct floor experience managing physical infrastructure. From there, taking on lead responsibilities for power and cooling systems, pursuing certifications such as BICSI RCDD or CDCP, and demonstrating project ownership on capacity expansions or retrofit builds are the steps that move candidates into senior titles.
Can you get hired as a senior data center engineer with limited experience?
Breaking into a senior role with limited experience is difficult because most job descriptions screen for hands-on infrastructure management at scale. A realistic path is to target mid-level or lead technician roles first, then document specific projects where you owned power, cooling, or cabling decisions. Earning a recognized critical facilities credential alongside that experience can accelerate the transition to a senior title.
What does the senior data center engineer interview process look like?
The process typically includes an initial screen with a recruiter, a technical phone interview covering power systems, cooling design, and redundancy concepts, and then one or two rounds of on-site or video interviews with the engineering team. Many employers include a scenario-based exercise where you walk through a capacity planning problem or a hypothetical infrastructure failure to assess how you diagnose and resolve critical systems issues.
Where can I find and apply to senior data center engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to senior data center engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find the roles that match your background and apply directly to each listing from the same place.
