Speech Language Pathologist Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a speech language pathologist in Maine?
To work as a speech language pathologist in Maine you must hold a license issued by the Maine Board of Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, and Hearing Aid Dealers. Licensure requires a master's degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited program, completion of a supervised clinical fellowship, and passing the Praxis exam in Speech-Language Pathology. Most Maine employers also expect or prefer ASHA's Certificate of Clinical Competence, which aligns closely with state licensing requirements.
How much do speech language pathologists make in Maine?
Speech language pathologists in Maine earn a median of about $82,660 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $54,010 for the lowest 10% to over $108,580 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire speech language pathologists in Maine?
Maine speech language pathologist roles are posted by Preferred Therapy Solutions, MaineHealth, and HiredFirst and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Maine's hiring is spread across large integrated health systems, regional school administrative units, and outpatient rehabilitation groups that serve both urban centers and rural communities.
Which Maine cities have the most speech language pathologist jobs?
Waterville, Portland, and Bangor have the most speech language pathologist openings in Maine. Portland leads because it anchors MaineHealth and a dense cluster of outpatient clinics, while Bangor draws volume from Northern Light Health and the regional school districts it supports, and Augusta's openings are driven largely by state government agencies and central Maine's network of rehabilitation and educational providers.
Are there remote speech language pathologist jobs in Maine?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields because most SLP work requires direct patient or student contact. About 20% of speech language pathologist openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and the roles most likely to appear in that category are teletherapy positions serving rural school districts or patients in Maine's more remote counties where in-person providers are scarce.
How can I get hired as a speech language pathologist in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a supervised clinical fellowship position, which Maine employers including MaineHealth and Northern Light Health post specifically for master's graduates who have not yet completed independent practice hours. School administrative units across Maine regularly hire new graduates into school-based roles where the fellowship can run concurrently with employment. Completing your ASHA certification application alongside your Maine licensure paperwork signals readiness to hire even before the fellowship concludes, and candidates with bilingual skills or a pediatric clinical placement in Maine have a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to speech language pathologist jobs in Maine?
You can find and apply to speech language pathologist jobs in Maine on Migrate Mate, which lists current Maine openings across hospital systems, school districts, and outpatient settings. Search the roles that fit your specialty and experience level and apply directly to the ones that match.
