Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Coding Specialist
Verify your CIP code before applying
Coding Specialist roles span health informatics, computer science, and biomedical fields. Confirm your degree's CIP code appears on the STEM OPT designated degree program list before targeting employers, since a mismatch disqualifies you from the extension regardless of your job duties.
Check E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify before your STEM OPT extension starts. Search the E-Verify employer search tool directly or ask the HR team for their E-Verify Company ID number during the offer stage, not after you've accepted.
Target employers with active health IT contracts
Federal contractors and hospital systems with government billing contracts are far more likely to have E-Verify enrollment already in place. Filter your search on Migrate Mate to surface Coding Specialist roles at employers with verified sponsorship history in health informatics and IT.
Build your I-983 training plan around measurable coding outcomes
Your DSO must sign your I-983, but you draft it with your employer. For Coding Specialist roles, tie your learning objectives to specific skills like ICD-10 accuracy rates or EHR system proficiency so USCIS sees a clear connection between your STEM degree and on-the-job training.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
STEM OPT regulations require your compensation to match what a similarly situated U.S. worker earns. Run the OFLC Wage Search for the Coding Specialist SOC code in your metro area before negotiating, so you can confirm the offer meets the prevailing wage standard your employer must certify.
File your extension at least 90 days before OPT expires
USCIS requires your STEM OPT extension application to be submitted at least 90 days before your initial OPT EAD expires. Missing this window ends your work authorization with no grace period, so coordinate your I-765 filing timeline with your DSO and employer well in advance.

Find Coding Specialist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Coding Specialist role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not just your job title. Coding Specialist positions in health informatics, clinical data management, or healthcare IT typically qualify when your degree carries an approved STEM CIP code in fields like health informatics, computer science, or biomedical informatics. Verify your CIP code against the official STEM OPT designated degree program list before applying, since the role's duties alone don't determine eligibility.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my Coding Specialist employer?
Your employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify before your STEM OPT extension begins. This is a federal requirement enforced by ICE, not optional paperwork. Ask for the employer's E-Verify Company ID before accepting an offer. If they aren't enrolled, they must complete enrollment before USCIS will approve your extension, which can delay your start date.
How does the I-983 training plan work for a Coding Specialist role?
You and your employer complete the I-983 together, then your DSO signs it. For Coding Specialist positions, the plan should connect your STEM degree directly to training goals like mastering ICD-10 coding systems, EHR platforms, or clinical documentation workflows. USCIS reviews the I-983 to confirm the role provides practical training in your degree field, so vague objectives increase your risk of an RFE.
What happens to my work authorization if my H-1B is selected in the lottery while I'm on STEM OPT?
If your employer files an H-1B petition for you and it's selected in the lottery, cap-gap protection automatically extends your STEM OPT work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year while USCIS adjudicates the petition. You can continue working as a Coding Specialist without interruption as long as the petition remains pending or approved. Your DSO updates your I-20 to reflect cap-gap status.
Where can I find Coding Specialist jobs that already support STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters Coding Specialist listings to show employers with E-Verify enrollment and sponsorship history, so you're not cold-applying to roles where the employer has never hired an OPT student. This saves time during a period when your work authorization timeline is fixed and a rejected or slow offer can cost weeks of eligibility.
