Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List before you target Data Contributor roles. Computer science, data science, and information systems CIP codes typically qualify, but applied social science concentrations often don't.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before interviews
Ask recruiters to confirm their E-Verify employer identification number during the screening call, not after an offer. Employers not enrolled in E-Verify cannot legally employ STEM OPT students, and switching employers mid-process restarts your 60-day reporting window.
Frame your I-983 training plan around data workflows
Your training plan must connect your assigned data tasks, such as annotation pipelines or quality-control workflows, to specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree. Generic job descriptions get flagged by DSOs; map each duty to a coursework competency you developed.
Target employers with active DOL LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Data Contributor postings by employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications, which signals they understand work-authorization compliance and are prepared to support structured OPT training plans and future visa transitions.
Request the offer letter before your OPT end date
Your STEM OPT extension application must be filed while your initial OPT EAD is still valid. Submit the I-765 with your completed I-983 at least 90 days before your OPT expires to avoid an authorization gap between your initial and extended periods.
Cross-reference your role against O*NET before filing
Pull the O*NET occupation profile for Data Contributor or the closest matching SOC code and verify that the listed entry requirements include a bachelor's degree in a STEM field. If the profile lists a high school diploma as sufficient, document why your specific position requires STEM-level skills in your I-983.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Data Contributor role qualify for STEM OPT?
It depends on how the role is structured and what your degree covers. Data Contributor positions focused on data annotation, pipeline management, or quality assurance can qualify if your employer documents that the work requires and applies STEM-level knowledge. Your DSO will review the I-983 training plan to confirm the role connects to your specific CIP code, so the job description and learning objectives need to be precise, not generic.
What STEM degrees make me eligible for a Data Contributor extension?
Degrees in computer science, data science, information systems, statistics, mathematics, and related engineering fields are commonly approved under the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Your degree must carry an approved CIP code, not just a STEM-adjacent title. If your degree is in a social science or business analytics program, check whether your institution assigned it a qualifying CIP code before assuming you're eligible.
Does my Data Contributor employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify?
Yes, E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for STEM OPT. Your employer must be enrolled before your extension is approved, and you must be employed at an enrolled site, not just under an enrolled parent company. If your worksite is a subsidiary or client site under a staffing arrangement, confirm that the specific legal entity signing your I-983 is the one enrolled in E-Verify.
How do I find Data Contributor jobs where employers already understand STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employers with documented Labor Condition Application filing history, which identifies companies already familiar with work-authorization compliance. Searching there reduces time spent explaining STEM OPT requirements to recruiters who haven't encountered the I-983 process before, and surfaces roles where the hiring infrastructure for OPT students is already in place.
What happens to my STEM OPT if my Data Contributor job ends before the extension expires?
You have a 60-day unemployment grace period from your last day of employment to find a new qualifying position. If you start a new job within that window, you must update your DSO with a revised I-983 reflecting the new employer and training plan. If you don't secure new employment within 60 days, your STEM OPT authorization ends and you must either change status or depart the U.S.
