Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as an Electrical Engineering Technician
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's CIP code against the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List before you target roles. Electrical Engineering Technology (15.0303) and Electronics Engineering (14.1001) both qualify, but related fields like General Technology may not.
Filter job postings for E-Verify employers
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before investing time in an application. Ask the recruiter directly or search the E-Verify employer database. Many small electrical contracting firms and regional utilities hire technicians but are not enrolled.
Build a targeted resume around SOC codes
Electrical Engineering Technicians fall under SOC code 17-3023. Reference O*NET to identify the exact tasks, tools, and skills listed for this code, then mirror that language in your resume to pass automated applicant tracking screens.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers with STEM OPT hiring history
Search Migrate Mate to identify companies that have previously hired STEM OPT workers in engineering technician roles. Targeting employers with a documented pattern cuts the time you spend educating hiring managers about your work authorization.
Negotiate your I-983 training plan before you sign
Your employer must complete Form I-983 detailing your training goals, supervision, and salary before your DSO can authorize the STEM OPT extension. Raise this during the offer stage so HR isn't blindsided after your start date.
Check prevailing wage early to anchor your offer
Run your job title and location through the OFLC Wage Search before negotiations begin. STEM OPT itself doesn't impose a wage floor, but knowing the prevailing wage for Electrical Engineering Technicians in your metro strengthens your position and signals preparation to technical employers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my electrical engineering degree qualify me for the STEM OPT extension?
Your degree qualifies if its CIP code appears on the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Electrical Engineering (14.1000), Electrical Engineering Technology (15.0303), and Electronics Engineering (14.1001) are all listed. Check the exact CIP code on your diploma or transcript with your DSO before filing, since similar-sounding programs in general technology or applied science sometimes fall outside the list.
Does every employer hiring Electrical Engineering Technicians need to be on E-Verify?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a federal requirement for any employer hiring a STEM OPT student on the 24-month extension. This applies regardless of company size or industry sector. Before accepting an offer, confirm enrollment directly with HR or search the E-Verify employer database. If the employer isn't enrolled, they cannot legally hire you on STEM OPT, and enrolling takes additional time that may affect your start date.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for an Electrical Engineering Technician role?
Form I-983 must document your specific training objectives tied to your STEM degree, the supervision structure, how the role relates to your field of study, and confirmation that your compensation is comparable to that of U.S. workers in the same position. For technician roles, training goals typically reference hands-on lab skills, testing procedures, or systems integration work. Your DSO must approve the plan before your extension begins, so start the conversation with your employer at the offer stage.
How does cap-gap protect me if my H-1B is selected while I'm working as an Electrical Engineering Technician?
If your H-1B visa petition is filed before your OPT or STEM OPT expires and USCIS receives it by April 1, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that year. You can keep working as an Electrical Engineering Technician during this period without interruption. Your employer doesn't need to take any separate action, but your DSO should update your I-20 to reflect the cap-gap extension so your authorization is clearly documented.
Where can I find Electrical Engineering Technician jobs where the employer already understands STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate filters roles by employers with STEM OPT and E-Verify hiring history, so you spend less time explaining your work authorization from scratch. Electrical Engineering Technician openings at manufacturers, defense contractors, utilities, and testing labs regularly appear on the platform, and employers listed there are accustomed to completing the I-983 training plan and meeting STEM OPT supervision requirements.
