Verify your CIP code qualifies early
Cross-check your degree's CIP code against the STEM Designated Degree Program List that USCIS maintains. Engineering, environmental science, and applied physics codes commonly support Energy Consultant roles, but interdisciplinary degrees sometimes carry non-STEM CIP codes that disqualify you.
Target firms with active LCA filing history
Search DOL's OFLC disclosure data for employers who've filed Labor Condition Applications under energy-related SOC codes. Firms with recent LCA filings have already navigated the E-Verify and prevailing-wage process, making them far more likely to extend STEM OPT students without delay.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting any offer
Ask your prospective employer to provide their E-Verify Company ID number before you sign. You can verify enrollment status directly through the E-Verify portal. An unenrolled employer cannot legally support your STEM OPT extension, no matter how willing they are to hire you.
Build your I-983 training plan around measurable outcomes
Energy Consultant roles lend themselves to quantifiable learning objectives, energy savings metrics, audit completion rates, modeling software proficiency. A vague I-983 raises DSO and USCIS scrutiny, so draft your plan with specific deliverables tied to your STEM degree before your start date.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
Look up prevailing wages for your SOC code and geographic area using OFLC Wage Search before negotiating. STEM OPT training plans must reflect bona fide employment, and an offer well below the prevailing wage can trigger USCIS concerns about whether the position constitutes genuine practical training.
Find E-Verify employers through Migrate Mate
Filter Energy Consultant openings by E-Verify enrollment status on Migrate Mate so you only apply to employers who can legally sponsor your extension. Sorting by STEM OPT eligibility up front saves weeks of back-and-forth with recruiters who don't understand the E-Verify requirement.

Find Energy Consultant JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does my STEM degree qualify me for the 24-month STEM OPT extension as an Energy Consultant?
It depends on your degree's CIP code, not just the degree name. Engineering disciplines, environmental science, applied mathematics, and physics commonly appear on the STEM Designated Degree Program List that USCIS recognizes. If your transcript lists an interdisciplinary or policy-adjacent major, check your CIP code against the official list through your DSO before assuming you qualify. An O*NET review of the Energy Consultant role can also help you map your degree field to the position.
What does the I-983 training plan need to cover for an Energy Consultant position?
Your I-983 must describe how the Energy Consultant role directly applies your STEM degree through a structured, supervised training experience. Spell out specific technical skills you'll develop, energy modeling, auditing methodologies, grid efficiency analysis, and tie each to a learning objective. Both you and your employer sign it, and your DSO must authorize the extension before you start. USCIS can request it during a site visit, so vague language creates real compliance risk.
Why does my Energy Consultant employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify?
E-Verify enrollment is a legal prerequisite for STEM OPT, not a preference. The employer submits a Form I-983 training plan and uses E-Verify to confirm work authorization. Without active E-Verify enrollment, your DSO cannot authorize the 24-month extension and you'd be limited to your initial 12-month OPT period. Ask for your employer's E-Verify Company ID and confirm their enrollment status before signing any offer letter. Migrate Mate filters listings by E-Verify enrollment so you can identify eligible employers quickly.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my H-1B petition is filed but not yet approved?
If your employer files an H-1B cap-subject petition before your STEM OPT expires and you remain in a valid status on April 1, the cap-gap rule automatically extends your OPT EAD through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can continue working for the same E-Verify employer in the same Energy Consultant role during that period. USCIS issues a cap-gap extension that your DSO documents in SEVIS. If the H-1B is not selected in the lottery, your authorization ends when the cap-gap period closes.
Can I work as an independent contractor or consultant through my own LLC on STEM OPT?
No. STEM OPT requires a bona fide employer-employee relationship with an E-Verify-enrolled organization. Self-employment through your own entity does not satisfy the I-983 training plan requirement because there is no qualifying employer to supervise and sign off on your training. Energy consulting work through a staffing agency is also complex and requires the staffing firm, not the end client, to be the E-Verify-enrolled employer of record who signs the I-983.
