Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as an Energy Project Manager
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's CIP code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List before you target Energy Project Manager roles. Engineering management, systems engineering, and environmental engineering CIP codes commonly qualify, but your DSO confirms the match officially.
Filter job postings by E-Verify status
Ask recruiters directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before your first interview. Many energy firms are enrolled through federal contracting requirements, but smaller project developers and regional utilities sometimes aren't, which disqualifies them as STEM OPT employers.
Negotiate the I-983 training plan early
Bring a draft I-983 training plan to your offer negotiation. Energy Project Manager roles need clear learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, and employers unfamiliar with STEM OPT often delay signing it, which delays your extension start date.
Research prevailing wages before counter-offering
Look up Energy Project Manager wage levels by location using the OFLC Wage Search before you respond to any offer. Knowing the Level I through Level IV wage bands helps you evaluate whether an offer positions you competitively for a future H-1B LCA.
Target employers with federal energy contracts
Companies holding federal energy contracts are already E-Verify enrolled by law, which removes a key compliance barrier for STEM OPT students. DOE contractors, national lab subcontractors, and federally funded renewable infrastructure firms are strong targets for this reason.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsors
Search Energy Project Manager roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have active LCA filing history with DOL, confirming they've sponsored work authorization before. This removes the guesswork of cold-applying to companies that have never navigated STEM OPT or H-1B filings.

Find Energy Project Manager JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does an Energy Project Manager role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on whether your degree falls under a DHS-designated STEM CIP code. Engineering management, civil engineering, environmental engineering, and systems engineering degrees commonly qualify. The role itself doesn't trigger the extension, your degree does. Confirm your CIP code eligibility with your DSO before filing Form I-765 for the extension.
What does an employer need to do before I can start on STEM OPT?
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and must sign a Form I-983 training plan with you before your STEM OPT extension is approved. The I-983 outlines your learning objectives, supervision structure, and how the role connects to your STEM degree. Without a completed I-983 submitted to your DSO, USCIS won't approve the extension.
How do I confirm an energy employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Ask the HR department or recruiter directly for their E-Verify Company ID or a screenshot of their enrollment status. You can also request to see their E-Verify participation notice, which enrolled employers are required to display. Smaller project developers or regional utilities may not be enrolled even if they want to hire you, so verify this before accepting any offer.
What happens to my STEM OPT if my H-1B is selected in the lottery but not yet effective?
If your H-1B is selected and your employer files a timely cap-gap petition, your STEM OPT authorization automatically extends through September 30 of that fiscal year under cap-gap rules. You can continue working as an Energy Project Manager during this period without interruption, provided your employer maintains their E-Verify enrollment and your I-20 reflects the cap-gap extension.
Where can I find Energy Project Manager jobs where employers are already set up for STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate lists Energy Project Manager roles from employers with documented LCA filing history, so you can identify companies that have already navigated DOL and USCIS work authorization processes. This is more reliable than filtering generic job boards by sponsorship willingness, since those listings rarely reflect actual STEM OPT or E-Verify compliance.
