Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as an Environmental Project Manager
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's CIP code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program list. Environmental science, civil engineering, and environmental engineering codes all qualify, but environmental policy or management degrees sometimes don't. Confirm your school's DSO has the right code on your I-20 before you accept any offer.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify before USCIS can approve your STEM OPT extension. Search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name to confirm enrollment status. Many smaller environmental consulting firms aren't enrolled, so check early in the process, not after you've signed.
Target firms with active NEPA and EPA contract history
Federal contractors working on NEPA environmental reviews or EPA-regulated remediation projects almost always maintain E-Verify enrollment as a federal contracting requirement. Targeting these employers narrows your search to organizations already set up to hire you on STEM OPT without delays.
Build your I-983 training plan around specific project milestones
USCIS expects your Form I-983 to show measurable learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, not generic job duties. Map your training goals to concrete project deliverables, such as completing an environmental impact assessment or managing a remediation site from scoping through closure.
Apply for your extension 90 days before OPT expires
File your STEM OPT extension application at least 90 days before your initial OPT end date so your authorization continues uninterrupted while USCIS processes the request. Late filing ends your work authorization on the original expiration date, even if approval is still pending.
Use Migrate Mate to find E-Verify enrolled employers
Search for Environmental Project Manager roles on Migrate Mate, which filters for employers enrolled in E-Verify and shows DOL Labor Condition Application filing history. This cuts out the manual verification step and surfaces firms that have already hired STEM OPT candidates in comparable roles.

Find Environmental Project Manager JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does an Environmental Project Manager role qualify for STEM OPT?
It depends on your degree, not the job title. The role itself doesn't automatically qualify. USCIS requires your degree to appear on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program list by CIP code. Environmental engineering, civil engineering, and environmental science degrees typically qualify. Environmental policy or sustainability management degrees may not. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before assuming eligibility.
What does the E-Verify requirement mean for environmental consulting firms?
Your employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify before your STEM OPT extension is approved. Many boutique environmental consulting firms are not enrolled because E-Verify isn't federally mandated for private employers in most states. Federal contractors are the exception since federal contracting rules require E-Verify enrollment. You can confirm enrollment status through the E-Verify employer search before accepting any offer.
How should I structure my I-983 training plan for an environmental project management role?
Your Form I-983 must connect your STEM degree to specific, measurable training objectives at your employer. For environmental project management, that means tying learning goals to concrete deliverables like conducting site assessments, applying environmental modeling techniques, or managing regulatory compliance workflows. Vague descriptions of job duties don't satisfy USCIS requirements. Your DSO must review and sign the plan before you submit.
What happens to my work authorization if my employer loses E-Verify enrollment during my STEM OPT period?
If your employer loses or terminates E-Verify enrollment after your extension is approved, your authorization is at risk. USCIS requires E-Verify enrollment to be maintained throughout the STEM OPT period, not just at the time of filing. You have 60 days to find a new qualifying employer if your current one no longer meets the requirement. Report any employer changes to your DSO immediately.
Where can I find Environmental Project Manager jobs that are already set up to hire STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters Environmental Project Manager roles by employers enrolled in E-Verify and shows DOL Labor Condition Application filing history by role type. This lets you identify which firms have already navigated the STEM OPT process for similar positions, which shortens your job search and reduces the risk of an offer falling through over E-Verify status.
