Verify your CIP code maps correctly
Check your degree's CIP code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List before applying. Information Systems, Computer Science, and Engineering Management codes commonly support Security Project Manager roles, but mismatches delay or void your extension.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask HR directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify and request the Company ID as proof. An employer who can't provide it cannot legally employ you on STEM OPT, no matter how strong the offer looks.
Build an I-983 training plan around security PM competencies
Map your training objectives to specific Security Project Manager duties: risk assessments, vendor oversight, compliance audits. Generic plans draw DSO scrutiny. Aligning each learning goal to your job description strengthens the plan and protects your status.
Target contractors with federal security clearance work
Defense and federal IT contractors routinely sponsor STEM OPT because their security project pipelines require specialized technical degrees. Search Migrate Mate to filter for employers with active STEM OPT hiring history in security and project management.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
Security Project Manager prevailing wages vary sharply by metro and experience level. Run an OFLC Wage Search lookup before negotiating so you know whether an offer meets the DOL wage floor your employer must certify on your training plan.
File your STEM OPT extension 90 days early
USCIS recommends submitting your I-765 extension application no more than 90 days before your initial OPT end date. Late filing kills your authorization gap coverage, so coordinate with your DSO well ahead of that window.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Security Project Manager role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title. USCIS approves the extension based on whether your degree carries a STEM-designated CIP code and whether the role applies that technical knowledge. Security Project Manager positions grounded in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Engineering Management degrees typically qualify. Roles where the connection to your STEM degree is indirect may require stronger documentation in your I-983 training plan.
What does the I-983 training plan need to include for this role?
Your I-983 must describe how the Security Project Manager position uses and develops the technical skills from your STEM degree. List concrete learning goals tied to job duties like threat modeling, security architecture oversight, or compliance program management. Both you and your employer supervisor must sign it, and your DSO must approve it before USCIS adjudicates your extension. Vague or generic objectives are the most common reason DSOs push back.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Ask HR for the company's E-Verify Company ID number and the date enrollment was established. E-Verify enrollment must be active before your STEM OPT employment start date. You can also cross-reference by asking whether the employer has hired STEM OPT students before. Working for an employer who is not enrolled in E-Verify while on STEM OPT violates your status regardless of whether your I-765 was approved.
What happens to my STEM OPT if I'm in the H-1B cap-gap period?
If you file an H-1B visa petition before your STEM OPT expires and it's accepted for processing, cap-gap rules extend your work authorization through September 30 of the fiscal year the H-1B takes effect. Your Security Project Manager role continues uninterrupted during this period. Your employer must remain enrolled in E-Verify throughout cap-gap, and your I-983 training plan stays active until your H-1B begins.
Where can I find Security Project Manager jobs that hire STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for Security Project Manager roles at employers who have a track record of hiring STEM OPT students, so you're not guessing about E-Verify status or sponsorship willingness. You can also use O*NET to review the occupation profile and understand which STEM degree fields align most directly with the role before you apply.
