Verify your CIP code covers this role
Healthcare Project Manager positions sit under multiple SOC codes depending on the employer. Cross-reference your degree's CIP code against the STEM-designated degree list on USCIS to confirm your specific program qualifies before you apply.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Your STEM OPT extension is void if your employer isn't enrolled in E-Verify. Ask the recruiter for the E-Verify company ID or look up the employer directly through the E-Verify employer search tool before signing anything.
Build an I-983 training plan around PM frameworks
Your I-983 must show a direct connection between your STEM degree and the role's training goals. Frame learning objectives around EHR implementation, clinical workflow optimization, or healthcare data governance to satisfy your DSO's review.
Target health systems with active H-1B filing history
Employers who have filed H-1B visa LCAs through DOL for project management or informatics roles have already cleared the specialty occupation threshold. Use Migrate Mate to filter for those employers and prioritize them in your search.
Negotiate your offer letter before the I-983 is submitted
Your job title, duties, and reporting structure in the offer letter must align with the I-983. Get the final offer in writing before your DSO submits the training plan, or you may need to restart the approval process.
Check prevailing wage before evaluating compensation
Healthcare Project Manager wages vary significantly by metro area and industry segment. Run the OFLC Wage Search using SOC code 11-9111 to see the prevailing wage for your target location before comparing offers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Healthcare Project Manager role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not just the job title. If your degree is in health informatics, biomedical engineering, industrial engineering, or another STEM-designated program, and the role requires applying that technical knowledge, the extension is likely available. Your DSO confirms eligibility by matching your CIP code to the STEM-designated degree list maintained by USCIS.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Healthcare Project Manager position?
The I-983 must describe how the job provides practical training directly related to your STEM degree. For a Healthcare Project Manager role, that means documenting goals around health data systems, clinical process improvement, or technology implementation rather than generic management tasks. Your employer signs it, your DSO approves it, and it must be updated every six months.
Does my employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify for my STEM OPT extension to be valid?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a federal requirement for any employer who wants to hire a STEM OPT student on the 24-month extension. If your employer isn't enrolled at the time you start, your extension authorization doesn't apply. Always confirm the employer's E-Verify status before your start date, not after.
How does cap-gap work if I'm a Healthcare Project Manager on STEM OPT and get selected in the H-1B lottery?
If your STEM OPT expires before October 1 and your H-1B petition is filed before that expiration, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30. You can keep working in your Healthcare Project Manager role during that gap without any break in status, as long as the H-1B petition remains pending or approved.
How do I find Healthcare Project Manager employers who are set up to hire STEM OPT students?
Search on Migrate Mate, which filters Healthcare Project Manager listings by employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and active DOL filing history. That narrows your list to employers who already understand STEM OPT requirements, which reduces the back-and-forth about authorization and speeds up the offer process.
