Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization in Scrum Master
Verify your CIP code before applying
Scrum Master roles typically fall under computer and information sciences CIP codes. Check your degree's CIP code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List before targeting roles, since a mismatch disqualifies you from the 24-month extension regardless of job duties.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Your employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify, not merely registered. Ask HR to confirm their E-Verify Company ID during the offer stage. USCIS treats non-enrolled employers as ineligible to sponsor STEM OPT, making this a hard requirement, not a formality.
Structure your I-983 around agile delivery outcomes
Your training plan must name specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree. For Scrum Masters, connect sprint planning, retrospectives, and velocity tracking to your computer science or engineering coursework so your DSO can approve the plan without revision requests.
Search Migrate Mate to filter for STEM OPT-eligible roles
Use Migrate Mate to identify Scrum Master openings at employers with documented E-Verify enrollment and prior STEM OPT hiring history, so you're not cold-applying to companies that have never navigated the training plan and reporting cycle before.
Target employers with existing agile program infrastructure
Companies that already run formal agile programs are far better positioned to complete the I-983 accurately. Ask during interviews whether the team tracks velocity, uses retrospectives, and has documented sprint cadences, since these map directly to the training objectives USCIS expects on your plan.
File your extension application 90 days before OPT expires
USCIS requires your STEM OPT extension application to be submitted at least 90 days before your initial OPT EAD expires. Missing this window forces a gap in work authorization that your employer cannot bridge retroactively, even with a signed I-983 already in place.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Scrum Master role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not just the job title. Scrum Master roles most commonly qualify when the graduate holds a degree in computer science, information systems, or a related engineering field with an approved CIP code on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Your DSO confirms eligibility based on your specific degree and CIP code, not the job description alone.
What does the I-983 training plan need to include for a Scrum Master position?
The I-983 must document specific learning objectives that connect your Scrum Master duties to your STEM degree. For this role, that means tying sprint facilitation, backlog refinement, and team performance metrics to coursework in systems design, project management theory, or software engineering. Vague objectives like 'gain work experience' are routinely flagged by DSOs and will delay your extension approval.
How do I verify that a prospective employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Ask HR directly for the company's E-Verify Company ID and request written confirmation before signing an offer. You can cross-check enrollment status through the E-Verify employer search tool maintained by the Department of Homeland Security. Enrollment must be active at the time you begin working, and your employer must re-verify status if your EAD is reissued during the extension period.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my Scrum Master role is reclassified or my team is restructured?
Any material change to your role, reporting structure, or primary duties triggers a reporting obligation. You and your employer must update the I-983 and notify your DSO within five days of the change. If your new duties no longer align with your STEM degree, your DSO may determine the role no longer qualifies, which affects your extension eligibility going forward.
Where can I find Scrum Master jobs at employers already familiar with STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate lists Scrum Master openings filtered for employers with E-Verify enrollment and prior STEM OPT experience. Targeting companies that have already completed I-983 training plans and the associated reporting cycle significantly reduces the friction of getting your extension paperwork processed correctly and on time.
