Verify your CIP code before applying
Your STEM OPT eligibility depends on your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code, not just your major title. Ask your DSO to confirm your CIP code maps to an approved STEM field before you target employers or have your I-20 endorsed.
Filter job postings for E-Verify enrollment
Not every company that hires developers is enrolled in E-Verify. Search the E-Verify employer search tool to confirm enrollment before investing time in an application. A company without E-Verify enrollment cannot legally employ you on STEM OPT.
Build your portfolio around browser performance metrics
Hiring managers at E-Verify-enrolled tech companies look for candidates who can quantify UI work. Core Web Vitals scores, Lighthouse audit results, and load-time improvements give technical interviewers concrete outcomes tied directly to your engineering contributions.
Negotiate your I-983 training plan before accepting an offer
The I-983 must detail specific Front End Developer learning objectives, not generic job duties. Ask your employer to list frameworks, performance goals, and mentorship structure before you sign. A vague plan can trigger a USCIS RFE that delays your extension start date.
Use Migrate Mate to target employers with STEM OPT hiring history
Searching broadly wastes time on companies unfamiliar with STEM OPT requirements. Migrate Mate surfaces Front End Developer roles at employers who have sponsored international students, so you focus your applications where the process is already understood.
Time your extension application to protect cap-gap coverage
If you're transitioning from STEM OPT to H-1B visa, your cap-gap authorization runs through September 30 of the fiscal year you're selected. File your STEM OPT extension at least 90 days before your initial OPT EAD expires to avoid any gap in work authorization.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Front End Developer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Front End Developer positions typically qualify if the role requires applying knowledge from a STEM degree such as computer science, software engineering, or information systems. Your DSO will confirm eligibility based on your degree's CIP code, not your job title. USCIS evaluates whether the position directly applies your STEM field of study, so your I-983 training plan must connect your front-end work to your specific academic background.
What does my employer need to do to support my STEM OPT extension?
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify before your STEM OPT extension start date. They must also sign the I-983 training plan, which outlines your learning objectives, supervision structure, and how the role develops your STEM skills. Employers must report material changes to your role or work location to your DSO within five business days, and they must conduct evaluations at six-month intervals throughout your extension period.
How do I find Front End Developer jobs where employers already understand STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate lists Front End Developer roles at employers with international student hiring experience, which reduces the time you spend educating hiring managers about E-Verify and I-983 requirements. Focusing your search on companies already enrolled in E-Verify and familiar with training plan obligations speeds up the offer-to-extension timeline significantly.
What happens to my work authorization if I'm selected in the H-1B lottery while on STEM OPT?
If USCIS selects your H-1B petition and your employer files before your STEM OPT EAD expires, cap-gap provisions automatically extend your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can continue working as a Front End Developer without interruption during this period. Your DSO issues an updated I-20 reflecting cap-gap status, which serves as proof of continued authorization alongside your expired EAD.
What should the I-983 training plan include for a Front End Developer position?
The I-983 must describe how your Front End Developer duties directly apply your STEM degree. It should list specific technical skills you'll develop, such as JavaScript frameworks, accessibility standards, or performance optimization, alongside measurable goals and a supervision plan. Vague descriptions of general coding work are the most common reason USCIS issues an RFE on STEM OPT extension applications, so specificity in the training objectives section matters.
