Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization in Industrial Hygienist
Verify your CIP code before applying
Your STEM OPT eligibility hinges on whether your degree's CIP code appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program List. Environmental Health Science, Occupational Health, and Industrial Safety each have distinct codes, so confirm yours with your DSO before targeting roles.
Check employers for E-Verify enrollment
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify before you start. Ask hiring managers directly during interviews, or search the E-Verify employer search tool to confirm enrollment status before accepting any offer.
Target sectors with high Industrial Hygienist demand
Federal contractors are legally required to use E-Verify, making them reliable STEM OPT employers. Manufacturing, petrochemical, and construction companies also hire Industrial Hygienists regularly and are accustomed to I-983 training plans.
Build your I-983 training plan around AIHA competencies
Your I-983 must connect your STEM degree to specific on-the-job training goals. Frame learning objectives around industrial hygiene competencies like exposure assessment, hazard controls, and toxicology to show a clear degree-to-role connection your DSO and employer can both sign off on.
Search Industrial Hygienist roles on Migrate Mate
Filter by E-Verify enrollment on Migrate Mate to surface Industrial Hygienist openings at employers already set up to hire STEM OPT students. This cuts out the manual research step of confirming enrollment separately for each company.
Negotiate your start date around OPT timing
USCIS processing for STEM OPT extension applications can take several months. File your I-765 at least 90 days before your initial OPT EAD expires, and communicate your authorization window clearly so employers can align your start date with your valid work authorization.

Find Industrial Hygienist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does an Industrial Hygienist degree qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your specific degree's CIP code. Degrees in Environmental Health Science, Occupational and Environmental Health, Industrial Safety, and related fields commonly appear on the STEM Designated Degree Program List. Degrees in general business or non-STEM safety management typically do not. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO, who can check the official list maintained by the Department of Education.
Do all Industrial Hygienist employers support STEM OPT?
No. Only employers enrolled in E-Verify can legally hire STEM OPT students. Federal contractors are required to use E-Verify by executive order, so they're a reliable segment to target. Private employers in manufacturing, utilities, and construction often participate but aren't required to. Always confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer. Use Migrate Mate to find Industrial Hygienist roles at verified E-Verify employers.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for an Industrial Hygienist role?
The I-983 training plan must describe specific learning goals that connect your STEM degree to the Industrial Hygienist position. Typical objectives include conducting air and surface sampling, interpreting exposure data against OSHA permissible exposure limits, developing hazard control recommendations, and applying toxicological principles. Both you and your employer supervisor must sign the form, and your DSO submits it to update your SEVIS record before your STEM OPT begins.
What happens to my work authorization if my employer loses E-Verify access mid-employment?
If your employer's E-Verify participation is terminated or lapses, you lose eligibility to continue working under STEM OPT at that employer. You'd need to notify your DSO and either transfer to a new E-Verify-enrolled employer or explore other work authorization options. USCIS requires employers to remain enrolled throughout the entire STEM OPT period, not just at the time of hiring.
Can I apply for cap-gap coverage as an Industrial Hygienist on STEM OPT?
Yes, if your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT EAD expires and you're selected in the H-1B lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. Industrial Hygienist roles qualify under the H-1B specialty occupation standard given the degree requirements of the field. Your cap-gap coverage is tied to the I-94 and the timely H-1B filing, so confirm your employer's timeline early.
