Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as an Ios Software Engineer
Verify your CIP code before applying
Your STEM OPT eligibility depends on your degree's CIP code mapping to an approved STEM field. Computer science, software engineering, and information technology codes all qualify. Confirm with your DSO before your OPT end date so there's no gap in authorization.
Filter job postings by E-Verify status
iOS roles at companies not enrolled in E-Verify can't legally employ you on STEM OPT extension. Check E-Verify's employer search tool directly to confirm enrollment before investing time in an application or interview process.
Target companies with active mobile engineering teams
iOS engineers hired into vague or generalist roles face I-983 training plan rejections because the job duties don't clearly map to STEM learning objectives. Prioritize postings that specify Swift, Xcode, or iOS SDK work to keep your training plan defensible.
Negotiate your I-983 training plan before signing
Use Migrate Mate to structure your I-983 around concrete iOS engineering deliverables like app feature development cycles or code review milestones. A well-drafted plan protects you if USCIS or your DSO requests documentation mid-extension.
Time your STEM OPT application around your offer letter
You can apply for the STEM OPT extension up to 90 days before your initial OPT expires, but USCIS must receive the I-765 before that date. Coordinate your offer letter timeline with your DSO so the I-983 is signed and ready to file immediately.
Benchmark your offer against prevailing wage before accepting
Your employer's STEM OPT obligation includes paying at least the prevailing wage for your role and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the iOS software engineer wage level in your metro area before accepting any offer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my degree qualify me for the STEM OPT extension as an iOS software engineer?
Your degree qualifies if its CIP code falls on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, and information technology degrees typically qualify. Your DSO can confirm your specific CIP code against the list. The degree level must be a bachelor's, master's, or doctorate from a SEVP-certified institution.
How do I confirm my iOS engineering employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for STEM OPT employers, not a preference. You can search the E-Verify employer database directly to confirm your company's enrollment status before accepting an offer. If the specific hiring location or subsidiary is not enrolled, your STEM OPT extension is not valid at that site, even if the parent company participates.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for an iOS software engineer role?
Your I-983 must detail specific STEM learning objectives tied to your iOS engineering duties, such as developing features in Swift, implementing unit testing frameworks, or building CI/CD pipelines for mobile apps. Generic job descriptions won't satisfy the requirement. Your supervisor signs off, and the plan must be updated every 12 months or when your role changes materially.
What is cap-gap, and does it apply to iOS engineers on STEM OPT?
Cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization if your H-1B visa petition is selected in the lottery and filed before your STEM OPT expires. It bridges the gap between your OPT end date and October 1, when H-1B status begins. Your I-20 needs a cap-gap endorsement from your DSO to stay on payroll during that period. Not all employers understand this, so clarify it before your authorization date.
Where can I find iOS software engineer jobs where employers understand STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate lists iOS engineering roles at employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and demonstrated STEM OPT hiring history. Searching there filters out companies that are unfamiliar with the extension requirements or not set up to file the I-983 correctly, which saves time during a period when your work authorization timeline is already constrained.
