Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Security Operations Manager
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your STEM degree's CIP code covers information security or systems management by reviewing USCIS's STEM Designated Degree Program list. A mismatch at the I-983 stage can delay your extension even after an offer is accepted.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before interviewing
Ask your recruiter whether the hiring entity, not just the parent company, is enrolled in E-Verify. Security operations roles are sometimes staffed through subsidiaries or contractors whose E-Verify status differs from the brand name you recognize.
Benchmark your offer against OFLC Wage Search
Security Operations Manager salaries vary significantly by metro area. Pull the prevailing wage for SOC code 11-3021 using OFLC Wage Search before negotiating, so your offer clears the DOL threshold your employer must certify on your I-983 training plan.
Target companies with active security leadership pipelines
Search Migrate Mate's employer database to identify companies that have sponsored STEM OPT students in security and IT management roles. Employers already running structured OPT training plans are far faster to complete your I-983 paperwork than those doing it for the first time.
Build your I-983 training plan around measurable goals
Work with your DSO and hiring manager to define learning objectives tied to specific security operations competencies, such as incident response workflows or SOC tool proficiency. Vague training plans draw scrutiny; concrete, role-specific goals do not.
File your STEM OPT extension 90 days before OPT expires
USCIS requires your extension application to be filed while your initial OPT EAD is still valid. Missing the 90-day filing window means your employment authorization could lapse between your current EAD expiration and your extension approval.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Security Operations Manager role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not just the job title. Your STEM degree must appear on USCIS's STEM Designated Degree Program list and map to information security, computer science, or a closely related field. The role itself must also require and apply that STEM knowledge directly. Check your CIP code with your DSO before applying, since a general business or management degree alone typically won't qualify even if the job is in a technology environment.
What E-Verify requirement applies to STEM OPT employers?
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify as a condition of the STEM OPT extension. This applies to the specific legal entity employing you, not necessarily the broader corporate group. Before accepting an offer, confirm with HR that the hiring entity has an active E-Verify company ID. If they're not enrolled, they'd need to register before your I-983 training plan can be approved and your extension filed.
What goes into an I-983 training plan for a Security Operations Manager?
The I-983 must document specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, a description of how your daily work applies that knowledge, mentorship or supervision details, and a list of measurable performance goals. For a Security Operations Manager role, objectives typically cover incident response procedures, security monitoring frameworks, risk assessment methodologies, and team leadership skills with a clear connection back to your degree field. Your DSO reviews and signs the plan before it can be submitted.
How does cap-gap protection affect my job search for this role?
If your employer files an H-1B visa petition on your behalf before your OPT or STEM OPT EAD expires, cap-gap rules automatically extend your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year while your H-1B is pending. For Security Operations Manager roles, this matters most if you're hired in the final months of your STEM OPT period. Confirm your employer is prepared to file promptly, since a late petition can leave a gap in authorization even when cap-gap applies.
Where can I find Security Operations Manager jobs with E-Verify employers?
Migrate Mate filters Security Operations Manager listings to show only employers enrolled in E-Verify, so you're not wasting time applying to companies that can't legally participate in STEM OPT. You can also cross-reference O*NET for the occupational profile under SOC code 11-3021 to understand the role's typical degree requirements before tailoring your application materials.
