Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Technical Operations Manager
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code appears on the official STEM OPT eligible fields list. Operations management roles often require an engineering, computer science, or systems science degree to qualify, not a general business credential.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask HR directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before you sign anything. Employers can check their own status through the E-Verify employer search, and you can independently verify enrollment through the E-Verify portal.
Build a targeted employer list using DOL data
Use the OFLC Wage Search to identify companies that have filed LCAs for technical operations or engineering management roles in your target metro. Consistent filing history signals that the employer has infrastructure to support your STEM OPT paperwork.
Structure your I-983 around quantifiable operational goals
Your training plan must map specific learning objectives to STEM skills from your degree. For operations manager roles, tie goals to process optimization, systems analysis, or supply chain metrics so your DSO and employer can sign off without revisions.
Use Migrate Mate to filter jobs by E-Verify status
Search Technical Operations Manager openings on Migrate Mate, which filters listings by E-Verify enrollment so you're not wasting applications on employers who can't legally hire STEM OPT students. Filtering this way early saves significant time in your job search.
Flag cap-gap timing when negotiating your start date
If your OPT expires while an H-1B visa petition is pending, cap-gap protection through USCIS extends your work authorization automatically. Negotiate a start date that accounts for this window so neither you nor the employer faces a gap in authorization.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my STEM degree qualify me for the STEM OPT extension in a Technical Operations Manager role?
Your degree must appear on the STEM OPT eligible fields list by CIP code, and the role must directly use the knowledge from that field. A degree in industrial engineering, systems engineering, or computer science typically qualifies for technical operations work. A general business or management degree usually does not. Check the O*NET profile for this occupation to confirm the technical knowledge domains the role requires.
Does the employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify to hire me on STEM OPT?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for STEM OPT employers, not optional. Before accepting an offer or signing an I-983 training plan, confirm the company is actively enrolled. You can verify this directly through the E-Verify employer search portal. Companies that are not enrolled cannot legally employ STEM OPT students, regardless of how willing they are to sponsor.
What should my I-983 training plan include for a Technical Operations Manager position?
Your I-983 must connect specific on-the-job training activities to STEM skills from your degree program. For a Technical Operations Manager role, document learning goals around process engineering, systems optimization, data analysis, or supply chain management. Vague goals like 'gain management experience' will be rejected by your DSO. Both you and a company supervisor with hiring authority must sign the plan before your DSO can authorize the extension.
How do I find Technical Operations Manager jobs where employers are already set up to hire STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters Technical Operations Manager listings by E-Verify enrollment, so every result you see is from an employer who meets the core STEM OPT requirement. This removes the back-and-forth of asking HR about enrollment status on every application and helps you focus your time on roles where the process can actually move forward.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if I get selected in the H-1B lottery while working as a Technical Operations Manager?
If your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf before your OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap protection through USCIS automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that year. You can continue working in your Technical Operations Manager role during this period without interruption, as long as the petition remains pending or approved.
