Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Security Operations Engineer
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Computer science, cybersecurity, and information systems degrees typically qualify, but your DSO confirms the exact match before you file.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
An employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify to hire you on STEM OPT extension. Ask the recruiter or HR contact to confirm their E-Verify company ID number before signing any offer letter.
Build your I-983 training plan around SOC requirements
Security Operations Engineer roles fall under a specific Standard Occupational Classification code. Use O*NET to pull the formal duties and required competencies for that code, then map your training plan tasks directly to those descriptions to satisfy USCIS review.
Target employers with LCA filing history in cybersecurity
Employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for security or information assurance roles are already familiar with work authorization compliance. Migrate Mate surfaces this DOL filing data by role so you can focus your applications on employers who have sponsored before.
Time your STEM OPT application against reporting deadlines
You must file your STEM OPT extension request at least 90 days before your initial OPT end date. Missing that window forces a gap in work authorization, so coordinate with your DSO as soon as you have a qualifying job offer.
Use prevailing wage data to evaluate offer competitiveness
Look up the wage level for your Security Operations Engineer role and geography using the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating. An offer at or above the prevailing wage also signals the employer understands DOL compliance obligations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Security Operations Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in an eligible STEM field such as computer science, cybersecurity, or information systems and maps to an approved CIP code on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. The role itself must also relate to your degree field, which your DSO and employer confirm through the I-983 training plan.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my STEM OPT employer?
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify before your STEM OPT extension start date. This is a federal requirement, not optional. If an employer isn't enrolled when you file your extension, your authorization is invalid. Ask HR to provide their E-Verify company ID and verify enrollment status directly through the E-Verify portal before you accept an offer.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Security Operations Engineer?
The I-983 must describe how your day-to-day work connects to your STEM degree. For a Security Operations Engineer, that means documenting specific technical duties such as threat detection, incident response, or vulnerability assessment, alongside the learning goals they develop. Your employer signs the plan, and USCIS reviews it if you're selected for audit.
Does cap-gap protection apply if my employer files an H-1B petition while I'm on STEM OPT?
Yes. If your STEM OPT expires while a timely filed H-1B visa petition is pending for an October 1 start date, cap-gap extends your work authorization automatically until October 1 or until the petition is decided, whichever comes first. You don't need to file separately for cap-gap, but confirm your I-20 reflects the updated end date with your DSO.
Where can I find Security Operations Engineer jobs at E-Verify enrolled employers?
Migrate Mate filters job listings for employers with active work authorization filing history, so you're not wasting applications on companies that can't hire STEM OPT students. Search Security Operations Engineer roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have the E-Verify enrollment and compliance track record your extension requires.
