Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Staff Devops Engineer
Verify your degree's CIP code eligibility
Check the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List to confirm your specific degree program has an approved CIP code. Computer science and information technology degrees typically qualify, but degree titles vary by university, so confirm your exact program before applying.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify before your STEM OPT extension is approved. Ask hiring managers directly whether the company is enrolled, or look up the employer in the E-Verify employer search tool to verify status before you negotiate final terms.
Document DevOps training goals in your I-983
Your I-983 training plan must list specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, such as infrastructure-as-code skills, container orchestration, or distributed systems architecture. Vague goals like 'improve technical skills' get flagged by DSOs and delay your extension approval.
Target companies with active STEM OPT hiring history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Staff DevOps Engineer roles by employers who have hired STEM OPT students before, based on DOL Labor Condition Application data. This tells you which companies already understand the E-Verify requirement and I-983 process.
Start your extension paperwork 90 days early
Submit your STEM OPT extension application to USCIS no earlier than 90 days before your initial OPT expires. Filing late or outside this window can create a gap in work authorization, so coordinate the timeline with your DSO well ahead of your end date.
Match your DevOps role to your degree field directly
USCIS requires that your Staff DevOps Engineer position directly relates to your STEM degree. If your degree is in computer science or software engineering, map your job duties to core curriculum areas like systems design or distributed computing when completing your I-983.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Staff DevOps Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, Staff DevOps Engineer positions typically qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension because the role requires applying knowledge from STEM degree fields such as computer science, information systems, or software engineering. Your I-983 training plan must connect your specific job duties, such as CI/CD pipeline management or cloud infrastructure automation, directly to your degree's core subject areas.
How do I know if a company hiring for this role is enrolled in E-Verify?
You can search the E-Verify employer search tool directly to check enrollment status before you accept an offer. E-Verify enrollment is a federal requirement for all STEM OPT employers, not just large companies, so this applies whether you're joining a startup or an enterprise. Migrate Mate filters Staff DevOps Engineer listings by employers who meet this requirement.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Staff DevOps Engineer?
Your I-983 must list concrete learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, your job title, the name and E-Verify ID of your employer, your work schedule, and a description of how your duties relate to your academic field. For a Staff DevOps Engineer, acceptable objectives include learning infrastructure-as-code frameworks, Kubernetes cluster management, or systems reliability engineering. Generic descriptions without technical specificity will slow DSO approval.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my H-1B is selected in the lottery?
If your H-1B visa petition is filed before your STEM OPT expires and your employer files before the April 1 deadline for an October 1 start date, the cap-gap rule extends your work authorization automatically through September 30. You can keep working in your Staff DevOps Engineer role without interruption during that gap period, as long as you stay with the same E-Verify enrolled employer.
Which STEM degrees make me eligible for the STEM OPT extension in a DevOps role?
Degrees in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, software engineering, electrical engineering, and mathematics are among the most common qualifying fields for STEM OPT in DevOps roles. Your degree must appear on the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List by its CIP code. If your degree title is non-standard, confirm the CIP code with your DSO before applying, because the approval is tied to the program code, not the job title.
