Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization in Technical Team Lead
Verify your CIP code before applying
Your STEM degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code must map to the technical domain of the Team Lead role. Check your I-20 against the STEM Designated Degree Program List on USCIS to confirm eligibility before submitting any application.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask the recruiter directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before any offer stage. An employer who isn't enrolled cannot legally employ you on STEM OPT, regardless of how well the role fits your background.
Target companies with active engineering LCA filings
Employers who regularly file Labor Condition Applications for software or engineering roles are already familiar with work authorization compliance. Use Migrate Mate to filter Technical Team Lead openings by employers with documented STEM hiring history.
Negotiate your I-983 training plan scope early
Your Form I-983 must connect your team lead duties, including sprint planning, code reviews, and cross-functional coordination, to your STEM degree's learning objectives. Raise this during the offer stage so HR doesn't treat it as an afterthought after your start date.
Use the OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
STEM OPT employers must pay you the same wage they pay similarly situated U.S. workers. Run your job title and location through the OFLC Wage Search before signing an offer to verify the salary is defensible under DOL prevailing-wage standards.
Plan your H-1B timeline against your OPT end date
If your employer plans to sponsor your H-1B visa, the cap-gap rule extends your work authorization automatically if your OPT expires between April 1 and October 1 during an active H-1B registration year. Confirm the filing calendar with your employer at least six months before your EAD expires.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Team Lead role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on whether the role's core functions align with your STEM degree's CIP code. A Technical Team Lead position that requires engineering, computer science, or applied mathematics expertise and has you directly applying that knowledge, not just managing people, will generally qualify. Review your I-20's CIP code against the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List and confirm the match with your DSO before filing the extension.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my STEM OPT employer?
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify as a condition of employing you under the STEM OPT extension. This is a federal requirement, not a company policy choice. Before accepting a Technical Team Lead offer, ask the recruiter or HR team to confirm their E-Verify enrollment status. If they aren't enrolled, they cannot legally authorize your STEM OPT employment regardless of the role's technical fit.
How does the I-983 training plan work for a Technical Team Lead?
Your employer completes Form I-983 to document how your Technical Team Lead duties connect to your STEM degree's learning objectives. The plan must describe specific training goals, supervision structure, and how the role advances your practical skills. For team lead positions, this typically covers applied problem-solving, system design, and engineering mentorship. Your employer and DSO both sign the I-983, and it must be updated if your role or salary changes materially.
What happens to my work authorization if my OPT expires during H-1B processing?
If your employer files an H-1B petition before your OPT EAD expires and your petition is selected in the lottery, the cap-gap rule extends your work authorization automatically through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can continue working as a Technical Team Lead during this period without a new EAD. USCIS does not issue a separate cap-gap document; your expired EAD combined with proof of a timely filed petition serves as your authorization.
Where can I find Technical Team Lead jobs that support STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists Technical Team Lead openings filtered for employers with STEM OPT hiring experience, including companies already enrolled in E-Verify. Searching there lets you focus on roles where the employer understands the I-983 training plan requirement and is prepared to support the full 24-month extension rather than treating work authorization compliance as an obstacle.
