Verify your CIP code before applying
SAP Consultant roles typically require a computer science, MIS, or engineering degree. Confirm your program's CIP code qualifies for STEM OPT through your DSO before targeting employers, since an ineligible degree invalidates the extension regardless of job fit.
Build an I-983 training plan early
Draft your training plan before you accept an offer, not after. SAP roles should map learning objectives to specific modules like SAP S/4HANA or SAP SuccessFactors, with measurable outcomes your employer can sign off on without significant back-and-forth.
Filter employers by E-Verify enrollment status
Only E-Verify-enrolled employers can hire you on STEM OPT. Use Migrate Mate to filter SAP Consultant listings to employers already verified as E-Verify participants, so you're not wasting applications on companies that can't legally extend your authorization.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
SAP Consultant LCA filings must meet DOL prevailing wage requirements. Run your job title and location through the OFLC Wage Search before salary discussions so you know the floor your employer is legally required to meet.
Target employers with active H-1B filing history
SAP Consultant roles in consulting firms and enterprise tech companies frequently sponsor H-1B petitions. Prioritize employers with a documented history of H-1B filings in technology and business analysis roles, since your STEM OPT period is the window to secure that pathway.
Understand the 90-day reporting window after role changes
If your SAP role shifts significantly in scope or location, USCIS requires an updated I-983 within 10 days and your DSO must be notified. Track any material changes to your training plan to stay compliant throughout the extension period.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an SAP Consultant role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
SAP Consultant positions qualify when the role requires applying STEM knowledge directly, typically in systems integration, ERP configuration, or data analytics. Your degree must carry an eligible CIP code, such as computer science, management information systems, or industrial engineering. Your DSO confirms eligibility and recommends the extension through SEVIS before you file Form I-765 with USCIS.
Does my SAP Consultant employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for every STEM OPT employer, not just large companies. Before accepting an offer, confirm enrollment directly with the hiring team or HR. If the employer isn't enrolled by your OPT end date, you can't begin the extension even if your I-765 is already approved. E-Verify enrollment must remain active for the full 24-month period.
What should my I-983 training plan cover for an SAP Consultant role?
Your I-983 should map specific SAP competencies to your degree field. For example, a computer science graduate in an SAP S/4HANA integration role should connect learning objectives to systems architecture, data modeling, and process automation. USCIS expects the plan to demonstrate a direct relationship between your academic training and daily work. Generic job descriptions don't satisfy that requirement.
How does cap-gap protection apply if I'm an SAP Consultant on STEM OPT?
If your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT expires and USCIS selects it in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can continue working as an SAP Consultant during this period without interruption, provided your status remains otherwise valid and your employer maintains E-Verify enrollment.
Where can I find SAP Consultant jobs where employers are already open to STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate lists SAP Consultant roles filtered for employers with E-Verify enrollment and H-1B filing history, so you can focus your search on companies already familiar with work authorization requirements. This matters for SAP roles specifically because consulting firms and enterprise software employers vary widely in their experience sponsoring international students through the STEM OPT and H-1B pipeline.
