Structural Engineer Jobs in Boston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a structural engineer job in Boston?
Focus your search on Boston's infrastructure, higher education, and life sciences construction sectors, which drive the most consistent local hiring. Engineering and design firms anchored in the Seaport District, Back Bay, and Cambridge tend to post the highest volume of openings. Candidates with MBTA or institutional project experience, familiarity with Boston's dense urban construction constraints, and a PE license stand out in this market.
Which companies hire structural engineers in Boston?
Boston structural engineer roles are posted by Thornton Tomasetti, WSP, and Stantec and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. The local market is a mix of large multidiscipline engineering firms, specialized structural consultancies, and general contractors managing major institutional and transit projects across the city.
Are there remote structural engineer jobs in Boston?
Yes, but with significant limits. Structural engineering is fundamentally site-dependent, so fully remote roles are rare. About 33% of structural engineer openings tied to Boston are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting positions where analysis, modeling, and document production can be done off-site. Roles tied to active construction administration or field inspection remain in-person.
How can I get a structural engineer job in Boston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Boston is targeting junior structural engineer or EIT roles at mid-size consulting firms concentrated in the Seaport and Cambridge, where project volume is high enough to support entry-level staff. Boston's active university and hospital construction pipeline creates demand for entry-level analysts supporting larger project teams. A relevant internship with a local firm, even part-time, significantly improves hiring odds with those same employers.
Which industries hire the most structural engineers in Boston?
The sectors hiring the most structural engineers in Boston are Consulting & Professional Services and Construction & Real Estate, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Boston's ongoing investment in transit infrastructure, university campus expansion, and life sciences lab construction keeps demand concentrated across these sectors throughout the year.
