Manufacturing Engineer – Equipment, Process & Quality

Position Overview
We are looking for a hands-on Manufacturing Engineer who will have broad responsibility for equipment reliability, manufacturing processes, production improvement, and product quality.
This is not a desk-based engineering position. The individual will spend significant time on the production floor working directly with operators, maintenance, quality, and management. We need someone who takes ownership of problems and actively works to solve them.
When a machine is down, quality is off, or production is not running properly, this person should be on the production floor helping determine the cause, correct the immediate problem, and develop a permanent solution to prevent it from happening again.
Primary Responsibilities
Equipment & Maintenance
- Respond to equipment breakdowns and actively assist in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing manufacturing machinery
- Troubleshoot mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, controls, and process-related equipment problems
- Work hands-on with operators and maintenance personnel to get equipment back into production
- Identify root causes of recurring equipment failures and implement permanent corrective actions
- Help develop and improve preventive maintenance programs
- Assist with equipment modifications, upgrades, installations, commissioning, and startups
- Work with outside vendors and equipment manufacturers when specialized support is required
- Improve equipment reliability and reduce unplanned downtime
Manufacturing & Process Improvement
- Troubleshoot coating, laminating, sheeting, web-handling, and other manufacturing process issues
- Improve machine speeds, uptime, yields, waste, setup/changeover times, and overall process capability
- Analyze production and downtime data to identify bottlenecks and improvement opportunities
- Help scale existing manufacturing processes and increase production capacity
- Support production trials and new product/process development
- Develop and improve operating procedures, work instructions, process controls, and operator training
- Help evaluate and implement equipment modifications, automation opportunities, and capital improvements
Quality
- Take an active role in ensuring products consistently meet customer specifications and internal quality requirements
- Troubleshoot product quality issues and determine whether problems originate from raw materials, equipment, process conditions, operating practices, or other causes
- Perform root-cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions
- Help establish and maintain process controls, testing requirements, inspection procedures, and quality standards
- Review production and quality data to identify trends and prevent recurring problems
- Support investigation and resolution of customer complaints and nonconforming material
- Work closely with production and quality personnel on startup approvals, in-process inspections, and finished product quality
- Help improve documentation, traceability, specifications, work instructions, and quality procedures
- Participate in customer and supplier quality discussions when necessary

- Does not simply identify or report problems—takes responsibility for driving issues through to resolution
- When equipment is down, quality is off, or production is not running properly, goes directly to the production floor to understand the problem and actively help resolve it
- Strong sense of urgency when production, equipment reliability, product quality, or customer commitments are at risk
- Able to address the immediate problem while also identifying and implementing longer-term solutions to prevent recurrence
- Proactive in identifying potential equipment, process, and quality problems before they result in downtime, waste, or customer issues
- Comfortable making decisions, setting priorities, and taking initiative without requiring constant direction
- Strong follow-through and verifies that corrective actions actually solved the problem
Ideal Candidate
- Approximately 3–7+ years of hands-on manufacturing, process, equipment, or mechanical engineering experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, or related discipline preferred; equivalent highly relevant hands-on manufacturing experience should also be considered
- Strong mechanical aptitude and demonstrated ability to troubleshoot industrial manufacturing equipment
- Comfortable working directly on machinery and assisting with repairs when equipment is down
- Experience with mechanical systems such as bearings, rollers, drives, gearboxes, motors, pumps, pneumatics, hydraulics, and sensors
- Electrical and controls troubleshooting experience is highly desirable, including PLCs, VFDs, motors/drives, sensors, and industrial controls
- Strong understanding of manufacturing quality principles, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, process controls, and continuous improvement
- Paper/converting experience is a plus but not required
- Experience with coating, laminating, printing, films, packaging, web handling, slitting, sheeting, or other continuous-process manufacturing would be highly relevant
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Resourceful, practical, and willing to get hands-on
- Strong work ethic, initiative, accountability, communication skills, and follow-through
- Comfortable working in a smaller manufacturing company where responsibilities are broad and everyone works together to solve problems
- Fully on-site; local candidate preferred
Hours
- Primarily first shift / normal business hours
- Flexibility required to occasionally support off-shift production for equipment breakdowns, troubleshooting, startups, trials, quality issues, or training
Pay: $85,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
