PART-TIME HEAVY CIVIL CONSTRUCTION ESTIMATOR

MDR Construction Co., Inc. is seeking an experienced Heavy Civil Construction Estimator to join our team on a part-time basis.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced estimator, former project manager, construction professional, or industry veteran who wants to continue contributing their knowledge while working a flexible schedule of approximately two to three days per week.

MDR is a Massachusetts heavy-civil contractor performing highway, roadway, and underground utility construction for MassDOT, cities, towns, and other public agencies. Our projects include roadway reconstruction and extensive water-main, sanitary-sewer, drainage, excavation, grading, paving, and related infrastructure work.

Primary Responsibilities

• Review MassDOT and municipal bid documents, plans, specifications, addenda, and contract requirements.
• Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for roadway, utility, excavation, drainage, water, sewer, paving, concrete, and related construction activities.
• Develop labor, equipment, material, subcontractor, trucking, and production costs.
• Solicit and evaluate quotations from subcontractors, material suppliers, trucking companies, and vendors.
• Review bid quantities and identify plan discrepancies, unusual contract requirements, utility conflicts, risks, and potential cost exposures.
• Prepare detailed estimates and bid summaries for management review.
• Assist with developing crew compositions, production rates, construction approaches, and project schedules.
• Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits when necessary.
• Assist with MassDOT and municipal electronic bid submissions.
• Maintain organized estimating records, supplier quotations, subcontractor proposals, and historical cost information.
• Participate in bid-review meetings and provide recommendations concerning project risks, opportunities, and pricing strategy.
• Assist Project Managers with change-order estimates, extra-work pricing, and cost analysis when needed.

Desired Qualifications

• Significant estimating, project-management, or field-management experience in heavy-civil construction.
• Strong understanding of highway, roadway, and underground utility construction.
• Experience estimating water-main, sanitary-sewer, drainage, earthwork, grading, paving, concrete, and traffic-management operations.
• Familiarity with MassDOT and Massachusetts municipal public-works contracts is strongly preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, details, quantity sheets, and contract documents.
• Knowledge of construction equipment, crew composition, production rates, materials, subcontractor pricing, and public-contract requirements.
• Comfortable using Microsoft Excel and estimating software.
• Strong judgment, attention to detail, and ability to recognize project risks before bid submission.
• Ability to work independently while communicating effectively with management, Project Managers, field personnel, subcontractors, and suppliers.

A college degree is not required when the candidate has substantial relevant heavy-civil construction experience.

Schedule

• Approximately two to three days per week.
• Schedule and hours can be arranged based on the candidate's availability and MDR's bidding needs.
• Additional hours may occasionally be available during busy bidding periods.
• The position will be based primarily at MDR's Tewksbury office. A limited hybrid arrangement may be considered for the right candidate, provided the individual can attend bid reviews, site visits, and important meetings when needed.

Compensation

MDR offers competitive compensation based on the candidate's experience, estimating background, availability, and preferred working arrangement. The position may be structured as a part-time employee or another mutually agreeable arrangement, subject to applicable employment requirements.
