Construction Estimator Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a construction estimator in New York?
Most construction estimators in New York enter the field with a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or architecture, followed by hands-on experience in a project coordination or field role. New York does not require a state-issued license specifically for estimators, but employers in New York City often expect familiarity with the New York City Building Code and Department of Buildings processes. Earning a Certified Professional Estimator credential through the American Society of Professional Estimators strengthens candidacy considerably.
Which companies hire construction estimators in New York?
Employers hiring construction estimators in New York right now include Jobot, Arcadis, and MLJ Contracting, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense pipeline of commercial towers, public infrastructure projects, and institutional construction keeps large general contractors and specialty subcontractors hiring estimators on an ongoing basis.
Which New York cities have the most construction estimator jobs?
New York, Amherst, and Rochester are the New York cities with the most construction estimator openings. New York City dominates due to its continuous commercial and mixed-use development activity, while Buffalo and Albany generate consistent demand through public infrastructure investment, university expansions, and state-funded capital projects that require dedicated estimating staff at regional contractors and engineering firms.
Are there remote construction estimator jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields because the role often requires site visits, in-person bid reviews, and coordination with project teams on the ground. About 9% of construction estimator openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with most flexibility concentrated in the early bid-preparation and document-review phases of the estimating cycle.
How can I get hired as a construction estimator in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a project engineer, estimating coordinator, or field engineer at a general contractor or specialty subcontractor in New York City or Albany, where large firms regularly hire candidates with a construction management degree and no commercial estimating experience. Turner Construction and Skanska both run structured associate programs in their New York offices that rotate early-career hires through estimating, scheduling, and project controls. Building proficiency in Bluebeam or PlanSwift before applying gives candidates a tangible edge over other entry-level applicants.
