Controls Technician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a controls technician in New York?
Most controls technicians in New York enter the field through an associate degree in electrical technology, mechatronics, or industrial automation, followed by hands-on employer training. New York does not issue a single statewide controls technician license, but projects involving low-voltage or electrical work often require workers to hold or work under a New York State licensed electrician or a New York City Master Electrician license depending on the borough and project type. Certifications from ASHRAE or industry vendors like Siemens and Honeywell strengthen candidacy considerably.
Which companies hire controls technicians in New York?
Employers hiring controls technicians in New York right now include GlobalFoundries, Johnson Controls, and Wolfspeed, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's density of large commercial real estate, healthcare campuses, and utility infrastructure means hiring is relatively steady year-round across both the metro and upstate regions.
Which New York cities have the most controls technician jobs?
Malta, New York, and Rochester account for the most controls technician openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its concentration of commercial high-rises, hospital systems, and transit infrastructure requiring ongoing BAS and SCADA support, while Buffalo and Albany generate consistent demand from manufacturing facilities, state government buildings, and regional utility operations.
Are there remote controls technician jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Controls technician work is fundamentally hands-on, requiring on-site commissioning, troubleshooting, and physical system access. About 3% of controls technician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to involve off-site programming, remote monitoring, or technical support roles rather than full field responsibilities.
How can I get hired as a controls technician in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a registered apprenticeship with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers locals active in New York, which combine paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction and lead directly to journeyman-level controls work. Alternatively, large facilities management firms and building automation contractors in the New York City metro routinely hire junior technicians or controls helpers from HVAC technician or electrician assistant backgrounds. Earning a vendor certification from Siemens, Johnson Controls, or Automated Logic before applying gives candidates a measurable edge over those without any credentials.
Where can I find and apply to controls technician jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to controls technician jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and location, and apply directly to each employer through the listing.
