Project Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project engineer in New York?
You typically start with a bachelor's degree in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering from an accredited program, then register as an Engineer-in-Training through the New York State Education Department by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam. Many New York employers hire directly from that point, expecting candidates to work toward full Professional Engineer licensure under a licensed supervisor. Strong candidates also build exposure to New York-specific codes, including the NYC Building Code or NYSDOT specifications, depending on their target sector.
Which companies hire project engineers in New York?
Employers hiring project engineers in New York right now include LaBella Associates, Colliers Engineering & Design, and Amazon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large-scale infrastructure programs, public utility upgrades, and commercial construction pipeline keep demand from a wide range of contractors, engineering consultancies, and public authorities active throughout the year.
Which New York cities have the most project engineer jobs?
The cities with the most project engineer openings in New York are New York, Rochester, and Albany. New York City dominates by volume because of its concentration of major construction programs, transit capital projects, and utility infrastructure work, while Buffalo and Albany draw significant hiring through regional infrastructure investment, state agency projects, and university and healthcare facility expansions.
Are there remote project engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Project engineering is largely a site-based role, and most New York employers expect regular presence on job sites or in project offices. About 23% of project engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be in planning, estimating, or document control functions rather than active field coordination roles.
How can I get hired as a project engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or junior project engineer role with a large New York general contractor or public agency such as the New York City Department of Design and Construction or the MTA, both of which run structured programs for new graduates. Candidates who have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and hold a degree in an engineering discipline are prioritized. Adjacent roles like project coordinator, field engineer, or estimator at mid-size New York firms are also common stepping stones into full project engineer positions.
Where can I find and apply to project engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to project engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across New York City, Buffalo, Albany, and other markets in the state. Find roles that fit your experience and specialty and apply directly through each listing.
