Senior Level Structural Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a senior level structural engineer job?
Employers hiring at the senior level look for engineers who can own a project from concept through construction documents without close supervision. A portfolio showing structural systems you led, complex problems you resolved, and decisions you made under your own authority carries more weight than credentials alone. Demonstrating mentorship of junior engineers and fluency in relevant codes and software puts candidates ahead.
Which companies hire senior level structural engineers?
Companies hiring senior level structural engineers right now include WSP, Stantec, and Kiewit, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Hiring at this level comes from a mix of large engineering consultancies, specialty structural firms, and owner-operators managing complex capital projects who need engineers capable of leading without significant oversight.
Are there remote senior level structural engineer jobs?
Yes, though most senior structural roles still require regular site presence or client-facing work. About 24% of senior level structural engineer openings are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, concentrated in design-phase and project management roles where daily field visits are not required. Fully remote positions tend to be with larger firms that have distributed project teams.
What makes a structural engineer role senior level?
Senior structural engineer roles are defined by ownership and scope rather than task execution. At this level, you are expected to lead the structural design of full projects, make independent technical judgments, coordinate across disciplines, and review or mentor the work of less experienced engineers. The role carries accountability for outcomes, not just deliverables, and typically involves direct client or stakeholder communication.
Which industries hire the most senior level structural engineers?
Senior level structural engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Energy, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Those sectors drive demand because they involve high-value, technically complex projects where experienced engineers are needed to manage risk, satisfy code requirements, and coordinate with architects, contractors, and owners throughout the project lifecycle.
