Mid Level Substation Electrical Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a mid level substation electrical engineer job?
Position your experience around ownership, not just task completion. Highlight projects where you led the protection and control design, managed vendor submittals, or coordinated with a utility from interconnection through commissioning. Emphasize your familiarity with relevant standards such as NERC, IEEE, or NESC, and make sure your resume reflects specific deliverables, not just responsibilities. Concrete outcomes matter more than years at this stage.
Which companies hire mid level substation electrical engineers?
Companies hiring mid level substation electrical engineers right now include Sargent & Lundy, Kiewit, and Quanta Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Engineering consulting firms, electric utilities, and power delivery contractors tend to hire the most consistently at this level, particularly those with active transmission, distribution, or renewable interconnection programs.
Are there remote mid level substation electrical engineer jobs?
Yes, though most roles involve a significant field or office component given the hands-on nature of substation work. About 21% of mid level substation electrical engineer openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions typically focus on design, modeling, or protection engineering rather than commissioning or site coordination duties.
How do I move up to a mid level substation electrical engineer role?
The path from entry level to mid level is built on progressively owning more of a project cycle. That means moving from drafting designs under supervision to producing complete protection and control packages, writing commissioning procedures, and interfacing with utilities independently. Engineers who pursue Professional Engineer licensure, deepen their relay programming skills, and document measurable project contributions tend to make that transition faster.
Which industries hire the most mid level substation electrical engineers?
Mid Level substation electrical engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Energy, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Those sectors drive demand because grid modernization, renewable energy interconnection, and aging infrastructure replacement all require engineers who can take projects from design through energization with limited supervision.
