Substitute Teacher Jobs in Boston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a substitute teacher job in Boston?
The most direct path in Boston is applying directly to the Boston Public Schools system, which is the city's largest employer of substitute teachers and runs its own hiring pipeline separate from private schools. Charter networks concentrated in Roxbury, Dorchester, and Jamaica Plain also hire frequently. Candidates with experience in special education, bilingual instruction, or early childhood settings stand out in Boston's market, where schools serving diverse student populations compete for qualified substitutes.
Which companies hire substitute teachers in Boston?
Companies currently hiring substitute teachers in Boston include Boston Public Schools, YMCA of Greater Boston, and Bay Cove Human Services, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Boston's hiring pool includes large public school systems, charter management organizations, and private and parochial schools concentrated across the city's neighborhoods.
Are there remote substitute teacher jobs in Boston?
Remote substitute teacher work is uncommon by nature, since most roles require in-person classroom coverage. About 100% of substitute teacher openings tied to Boston are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those postings tend to involve virtual school programs or online tutoring support rather than traditional classroom substituting.
How can I get a substitute teacher job in Boston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Boston is applying through Boston Public Schools' substitute pool, which hires candidates who meet Massachusetts' basic eligibility requirements and welcomes applicants without extensive classroom backgrounds. Charter schools in Roxbury and Dorchester often hire paraprofessionals and instructional aides as a stepping stone, and after-school program roles at Boston-area nonprofits and community organizations build the classroom experience that makes candidates more competitive for full substitute positions.
