Superintendent Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a superintendent in Iowa?
To become a school superintendent in Iowa, you must hold an endorsement issued by the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners, which requires a master's degree in educational leadership or administration and qualifying experience as a licensed educator or administrator. Construction and facilities superintendents follow a different path, typically advancing through project management or trades experience without a state license requirement. Obtaining the Iowa superintendency endorsement is the critical credential for any district leadership role.
How much do superintendents make in Iowa?
Superintendents in Iowa earn a median of about $104,260 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,350 for the lowest 10% to over $154,000 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire superintendents in Iowa?
Iowa superintendent roles are posted by Kiewit, Ledcor, and Rise Construction and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Iowa's mix of large public school districts, regional construction firms, and utilities creates consistent openings across both the education and built-environment sectors.
Which Iowa cities have the most superintendent jobs?
Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and Sioux City are the Iowa cities with the most superintendent openings. Des Moines dominates due to its large unified school district and active commercial construction pipeline, while Cedar Rapids and Davenport draw consistent postings from regional contractors, manufacturing facilities, and mid-size school districts serving the Corridor and Quad Cities areas.
Are there remote superintendent jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're rare. Superintendent work is inherently on-site, whether you're overseeing a school district's operations or managing a construction project. About 9% of superintendent openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those postings tend to involve administrative, curriculum oversight, or program coordination functions rather than day-to-day facilities or site supervision.
How can I get hired as a superintendent in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is working as a building principal, assistant principal, or curriculum director within an Iowa school district before seeking a superintendency. Large districts like Des Moines Public Schools and Cedar Rapids Community School District regularly promote internal candidates and post assistant superintendent roles that serve as a formal pipeline. For construction, starting as a project engineer or field supervisor with Iowa-based contractors gives you the site management background most hiring managers require before considering a superintendent title.
Where can I find and apply to superintendent jobs in Iowa?
