Systems Security Engineer Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a systems security engineer in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania does not require a state-issued license to work as a systems security engineer, so the path runs through education and industry credentials. Most employers expect a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, computer science, or information systems. From there, earning a CompTIA Security+, CISSP, or Certified Ethical Hacker credential signals readiness to hiring managers. Candidates targeting Pennsylvania's defense and government sector should also pursue security clearance eligibility early, as it is a hard requirement for many roles.
How much do systems security engineers make in Pennsylvania?
Systems security engineers in Pennsylvania earn a median of about $107,230 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $59,890 for the lowest 10% to over $167,420 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire systems security engineers in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring systems security engineers in Pennsylvania right now include Lockheed Martin, Data Intelligence, and LMI, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Pennsylvania's dense concentration of defense contractors, major health systems, and financial institutions means hiring is distributed across both the Philadelphia metro and the greater Pittsburgh area.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most systems security engineer jobs?
King of Prussia, Philadelphia, and Pennsylvania account for the most systems security engineer openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia leads because of its large financial services sector, major health systems, and proximity to federal agencies and defense contractors in the surrounding suburbs, while Pittsburgh draws demand from university research institutions, healthcare networks, and a growing technology sector.
Are there remote systems security engineer jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 25% of systems security engineer openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves cloud platforms, monitoring dashboards, and policy analysis rather than on-site hardware. Roles requiring hands-on lab work, classified facility access, or on-premises infrastructure support are more likely to require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a systems security engineer in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior security analyst or IT security associate role, which large Pennsylvania employers like Booz Allen Hamilton, UPMC, and Comcast use as a pipeline for developing engineers. Candidates without direct experience benefit most from earning a CompTIA Security+ credential before applying, as many Pennsylvania defense and healthcare employers treat it as a baseline. Adjacent roles in IT support, network administration, or systems administration at Pennsylvania government agencies or universities also provide a credible transition route into security engineering.
