Tax Attorney Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax attorney in Iowa?
You become a tax attorney in Iowa by earning a Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and passing the Iowa Bar Exam, administered by the Iowa Board of Law Examiners. After admission, you practice under the Iowa Supreme Court's oversight and must complete continuing legal education each reporting period. Many Iowa tax attorneys also pursue an LLM in Taxation to deepen expertise in federal and state tax matters and improve competitiveness for in-house and specialized firm roles.
How much do tax attorneys make in Iowa?
Tax attorneys in Iowa earn a median of about $123,550 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,790 for the lowest 10% to over $268,460 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax attorneys in Iowa?
Iowa tax attorney roles are posted by Intuit, KPMG, and Eide Bailly and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Iowa's strong financial services, insurance, and agribusiness sectors mean in-house counsel positions appear regularly alongside openings at regional and AmLaw-ranked law firms headquartered in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids.
Which Iowa cities have the most tax attorney jobs?
Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Sioux City account for the largest share of tax attorney openings in Iowa. Des Moines drives the most demand as Iowa's financial and insurance capital, home to major corporate headquarters, while Cedar Rapids supports roles tied to manufacturing and regional banking, and Iowa City openings are often anchored by the University of Iowa and its affiliated health and research entities.
Are there remote tax attorney jobs in Iowa?
Yes, and more than most legal specialties, because tax work is heavily research- and document-driven. About 10% of tax attorney openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the analytical and advisory nature of the role. Document review, tax research, and client advisory work are the functions most commonly performed off-site, while court appearances and in-person client closings typically require a physical presence.
How can I get hired as a tax attorney in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a summer associate or law clerk position at an Iowa law firm while still in law school, which frequently converts to a full-time associate offer. Large Des Moines firms and in-house legal departments at companies like Principal Financial Group and Wells Fargo run structured associate programs for new graduates. Candidates with a tax LLM, prior accounting experience, or a CPA credential stand out for entry-level roles. Lateral moves from accounting or compliance analyst positions are another recognized door into junior tax counsel roles at Iowa employers.
Where can I find and apply to tax attorney jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to tax attorney jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current Iowa openings from employers across the state. Search the listings to find roles that fit your experience level and practice area, then apply directly through each posting. No signup is needed to search or view open positions.
